None of my passwords worked; not my computer password, not my wifi password, not any of my old or current iTunes passwords, arghhhh!! I'm stuck with a $1200 brick right now.
How is your phone a brick because you don't have the password to the encrypted back up? That doesn't make sense.
Have you review this article:
About encrypted backups in iTunes - Apple Support
It explains what to do if you forgot the passcode.
Funny thing is that i never created the encrypted backup, it was a regular backup as i do every time my phone is getting slow or something isn't working properly.. this last time was the first time i was asked for a password like that, maybe because is a new iMac or maybe the new iTunes... anyways, i just checked and verify that is selected and i can't even change it
You may be correct, but Encrypt Backup wasn't "checked" this morning. I checked it this morning only so I could then change it. I guess I must have made an Encrypted Backup at some point, but I don't know why, since my SSD is already encrypted.
It won't be checked until you initiate a backup if there is no prior backup, as iTunes does not know it was encrypted until the phone "tells" it. The reason to encrypt the backup, regardless of disk encryption: If it isn't encrypted personal information such as health data and passwords will be excluded from the backup.
iCloud backups are always encrypted, but don't need a password because your Apple ID and password are used as the encryption keys.
Lawrence,
I'm reaching out to you directly to avoid reading this entire thread and because you have recent advice in this area. I’m giving my daughter an iPhone 7 Plus and trying to restore an encrypted backup from her 6s. We don’t remember the backup password but may be able to guess it if we have enough attempts. Are there limits to the number of failed password attempts and if so is the backup ever destroyed as the result of too many failures?
Thanks
While I was creating backup I did not select Encrypt iPhone backup and did not set password for that when I was trying to restore that on my new phone it ask me password what should I do I tried every password that I can possibly remember but did not work?
No.
The user set the password at some point that Apple placed on the device to protect the backup from being restored by any othpsssword.
That is what passwords do.
Read through this conversation. Apple did not set the password.
The password to unlock your backup doesn't have any specific requirements. It can definitely be the same as your passcode, or your Apple ID password if you choose to sign it as that. If it was simply your Apple ID password, then you could simply reset it, but then that would kind of defeat the purpose of encrypted backups in the first place wouldn't it? Yet you guys have your fingers in your ears
There has to be a glitch to where it encrypts a backup and picks your original itunes account password.
Tell you what... I'll take my fingers out of my ears long enough to hear you explain how your orginal iTunes password can be picked and entered into this dialog.
Twice. Against your will or without your knowledge. And then click the Set Password button after it becomes active.

Which demonstrates that this is a design problem other than human error. It says "Enter the password to unlock your iphone backup". The first thing I asked myself was "Which password are you talking about? Phone, computer, iCloud or iTunes password? The list goes on because of lack of specificity with even no pw recovery option for such important task like fetching a backup. I was lucky to try with a couple 'till I nailed it, but in terms of User Experience and Design Thinking: poor!
If you feel it could be improved, let Apple know here:
That worked because it is the password that you typed twice the first time you were prompted for a backup password. I posted a list of passwords that other users had discovered was their backup password. It is near the top of this page, at this link: Re: password to unlock your iphone backup file
I followed the advice posted. It is not my last email password, not my first, but my previuos.
This is 100% correct. I have no CLUE why this would be the case but this worked for me as well.
