Double Message Alerts with iPhone 4s.

Has anyone encountered this problem? And, more importantly, figured out how to fix this?

My iPhone 4s gives two rapid sound alerts for one text message, and I cant understand why. Very annoying.

Thisvactually worked for me. I just got my phone on black Friday and updated it with the latest iOS and started getting double alert chimes and thought it had to do with the push notifications. I went into settings>notifications and turned all the double chimers off then went into settings>messages and turned iMessage off. Reset the phone by holding it past the reboot til the phone turned off. Turned it back on, turned on the notifications I had switched off and problem fixed

This could answer the question I posted here on november 3rd. The thing is that now you're gonna have two separate alerts: the first one when the message is received; and the second one, when you unlock the screen and the notifications center alerts that there are new messages. The only solution that I found is to choose "none" in the alert type =S

This is now what I have - if the phone is locked there is a tone and then there is an additional tone when I unlock the phone and the banner notification pops up. This may be a separate issue. If you're away from your phone when the initial tone sounds, then this would be helpful. But for me, and I'm sure the vast majority, the locked phone is on me and the only reason I'm unlocking it is in response to the first tone, so the second is unnecessary/annoying.

For me, the initial problem was that 'alert reminder' was set to once, so I changed it to never. I also turned 'view in lock screen' to off.

Ultimate question - Is there a way to only have one tone regardless of whether or not the phone is locked?

I'm in the same boat as you Lou.

What's ironic is, as I read through this thread and then signed up for the forums, I recieved an email on my locked iPhone 4S. I turned on the screen unlocked it and I was refreshed to see the banner show up, no vibrate, no sound, just the banner showing me what I wanted to see; a preview of the email that had just arrived. I quickly looked in the settings for Mail and jotted them down.

I went into Messages and verified I had the same settings. Then I texted myself, hit the home screen button, locked the phone and waited. The phone vibrated and made the text message noise. Fair enough. Then I turned the screen on, unlocked it and... boom... another vibrate and noise along with the banner. Boo.

Sent another text from my wife's phone. Same result. Annoying as ****...

EDIT: Same thing happens with WWF. Grrrr...

What's odd is I have been fine since the hard reboot. Once in a while when I get a meeting invite it seems to double beep, but it has stopped for txt, etc. This all makes very little sense but it is clearly a software issue and my guess is, so long as we make enough noise, it will be addressed in an update.

Getting a replacement phone may work, but the reality is that the Apple folks apparently dont know what it is yet and are just swapping out phones in some cases to make the customer happy. An honorable tactic but I am hoping they will do the right thing and fix the bug in the OS.
