Double Message Alerts with iPhone 4s.

Has anyone encountered this problem? And, more importantly, figured out how to fix this?

My iPhone 4s gives two rapid sound alerts for one text message, and I cant understand why. Very annoying.

I said I would report back on this. I did a retore as a new phone (not from a backup) more than a month ago and the problem has not come back. So for me at least it seems to be fixed.

On the other hand, since the restore I have not tired syncing iMessage conversations accross devices, which I was doing before. I think the double alert might be linked to iMessage sending two alerts to, say, a phone number and an email address at virtually the same time. When I have some time I'll play around with that.

So, it seems all fixes are temporary and basically involve doing a reset. However, it also seems that starting from a fresh phone doesn't result in the problem. I don't want to start from a fresh phone and lose all my texts, etc, so I can't try it out. But if someone can try doing a fresh restore (not from a backup) and then texting normally for a week or two, we can verify that it only affects phones that restored from a backup.

Does anyone from Apple monitor this thread? It's obvious that there is a wide problem, I'm very curious to hear their response. I can't imagine that it's just some hardware bug affecting only a few phones. It seems very much like a software issue. Would love to hear from an Apple employee in the know.

I had Apple call me and the tech support told me to reset everything back to factory settings. This did the trick for a few days, however - it was really painful as you basically need to review/adjust all your settings and notifications again. In the end - like all others already stated - it was just a temporary fix.

Once the problem was back I made an appointment at the Genius bar. The guy seemed to have never heard of the problem and stated that it seems to be a problem with iMessage. However, he didn't have any solution and basically told me to have iMessage turned off. Well, that really defeats the purpose of this type of messenger.

The problem came back anyway and I found that the fastest temporary fix for me is to reset the network settings in the iphone settings. Downside to this is that wifi settings are gone, so you need to re-enter your password again.

Taking this all into consideration it seems to be a combination of the notification itself and the signal being transferred to the phone. Almost it receives the wireless signal twice within a mili-second and then starts to stutter. A software patch should be able to avoid such things through simply not allowing the tone to overwrite itself, but rather adding a delay of 1 or more seconds between playing the sounds.

I am just concerned that the Genius Bar guys did not seem to know at all about it. So therefore, please post and contact Apple, so they are aware of this issue and hopefully fix with the next iOS release.

I have the iPhone4s. Just got it saturday. This double ringing has been happening since day one. I find it hard to believe that it's a faulty phone if everyone is having this issue. Another issue I am having is when I am on the phone and I get a text message, the ring tone plays in my ear. I can hear it, but the caller can't. Is there a way to disable that as well??

Hi all,

I originally posted Nov. 24. I just wanted to give a quick update - the issue has't come back at all since my post in November. iMessage, for me, had nothing to do with the issue, as I didn't have it on in the first place. It may be the issue for some, but if that isn't working. . .

I did have vibrate with notifications turned on, but I turned it off. This made the issue go away, turning virbrate with notifications back on did not make the issue come back.

I want to be clear about iMessage as well. I had fully set up iMessage when I did the update to iOS 5 the day it came out. A few days later, I turned it off because I didn't like it. Much later, the double tone started. In an attempt to fix the issue, I turned iMessage on and off, and restarted the phone several times - nothing. I also turned iMessage on the other day, after having fixed the issue on my phone. It didn't cause the issue to come back. I haven't found a setting that has caused it to come back yet. So iMessage could be one issue, but it isn't the only issue.

It seems there is a trend in all of these responses, that simply turning on/off different settings within notifications and messages, then doing a reset (holding home & power button until the phone reboots), may fix the issue. It will probably take a lot of trial and error to find what may be causing your issue, and it may never fix the issue on your particular phone, but it's definitely a good starting place.
