Successful iOS 5 Updates?

I just wanted to get an idea of how many users are not having any updating issues. I am waiting to update my iphone 4 to iOS 5, and I want to be sure before I take the plunge.

Backing up 16GB (or more) through USB speeds (especially if your computer is old), can take quite some time. I didn't back up the music, since it is all on my HD, and I could (and did) reload it after the update. I also have a fast cable internet connection. The update took less than an hour from connection, to ready to operate. Of course that was a 3GS with about half the storage empty.

Problems. Tried to back up my iPhone4 prior to the update as I usually do, but the backup failed mid-stream. Then iTunes tried to restore my phone, then after a long time iTunes wanted to know if I wanted to restore using the backup. I said Yes, then iTunes said there was no backup! By this time iTunes had also installed iOS5 somewhere along the way. I unplugged and re-plugged the phone, finally got my apps back, but now they were scrambled across several pages and my contacts were nowhere to be found. Unplugged the phone, shut down iTunes, restarted iTunes, plugged phone back in and this time it synched my contacts back. All my apps are on the phone, but it is as if there are just-downloaded apps. I have to set each one up, log in, set preferences, etc, etc. Additionally, I also spent a bunch of time rearranging all the apps onto the pages as they were before.

Bottom line: the most awkward update ever from Apple and, judging by the comments I'm seeing across the web, my experience is not unique.

Sounds rather more like a strange error of misjudgement from here.
