Sound Check feature on iOS 5

hello,

I have discovered a problem withe the 'Sound Check' feature in the Music app on iOS 5

I always have this option turned on, and it worked perfectly on iOS 4

But now it has problems.

When i start the music player it works fine, but when i get a song that has low volume and it needs to scale up the volume, it doesn't work.

i need to go back to the Music settings, turn the Sound Check off and then back on again for it to work.

After some songs it magicly happens again, i have to go back to settings, etc.

It seems to happen when a song has low volume.

It works fine on my MacBook Pro with 10.7.2

I closed all other apps on my phone so nothing could mess things up, but nothing helps.

i use iVolume to adjust the volume on my songs.

Hope someone can help me out.

Sorry Charles but, in my case and as per the original post, the bug does not only happen when you skip songs and soundcheck does not work properly if you let the song finish normally.

Sound check on my iPod touch also went south with ios5. But, they may not want to fix this. They had a battery consumption problem they probably knew about before ios5. Notice how sound check does not work at the beggining of the song. Notice how when you hit your button the album art is on a song that has played before already. None of the smart playlist work anymore. All of this has to happen in the background. Music playing most likely was buffered in ios4 to give it a chance to correct it. Album art would have to change live before you press your button in order to see the current song playing. Smart playlist have to work live in the background, all of this would consume battery. For iPods we don't care - iPhone it's an issue. So, they may not want to fix it because these items consume battery life - which is a bigger issue in their eyes.

Just a thought

Relax Vet, chill, take a deep breath. . . Now, please, drop your rocks and go back home.

I have absolutely no intentions of throwing my iPod Touch in the garbage just because of this ridiculous sound check issue. I just won't be using it all that much to play music on anymore, and I thought that my comment about using a different brand-player just to listen to music was just that --- a suggestion pertaining to some sort of work-around.

However, now I realize that this suggestion of mine really wouldn't help those who have a iPhone, but in fact, most likely only the iPod owners, just as CWD82 has indeed suggested. Therefore, I also realize that my question (or comment) to that person (above) was also inappropriate, as well.

But anyway, I can certainly take a hint, and won't be posting in this thread any longer.

Turning off soundcheck is NOT a solution.

Third party programs or doing it yourself means adjusting the volume +/- dB tag in the music file.

The problem is that iOS devices are ignoring that tag in the music. So if you adjust it yourself or use a third party program, the problem will continue.

And don't forget to report the bug to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

I've noticed that Volume Limit (Settings/Music) displays the exact same behaviour: when you try to adjust it the volume changes wildly. Adjust it down slightly and suddenly the volume drops dramaticaly. Adjust it back up slightly and it returns to it's original volume or louder.

There's something very wrong with iOS 5.

ipod sound check does not wok. I work in a louder factory environment where there is no radio reception. Ipods and other mp3 players are the only way to go. For the last 4 years I have tried every possible way to make sound check work on 5 different ipods. Ipod Shuffel, 3Nanos, and 160g Classic. No matter what, in a big setting (200watt 8 speakers) you would have to chase the volume knob, Ipods just cant normalize volume. I tried taking off all write protected music (which cant be volume altered), and tuned on the sound check on the computer first before transferring music too ipod. This helped alot but still have to run for the volume knob. I have even tried all Itunes plus music (no cd imports), no luck. WAV files on 160gig (sound check on) worked best but still pretty off. One kid used Ipod touch, way off. Today we use IHeart Radio and Tune In stations on cell phones because most of them are volume normalized. When we play mp3's we use sony players because of their dynamic normalizer function works pretty good. I still love ipods but they are truly singular because once you share they become too loud or soft.

I had the exact same problem. All my music was scanned with replaygain and then converted to soundcheck data using mp3tag. Just upgraded to the iOS 6 GM and it looks like the bug was finally fixed! At least I can now skip tracks manually without getting my ears blown out 🙂

The new music app no longer displays progressive jpeg covers in coverflow though... but I can live with that in exchange for a working soundcheck 🙂
