Sound Check feature on iOS 5

hello,

I have discovered a problem withe the 'Sound Check' feature in the Music app on iOS 5

I always have this option turned on, and it worked perfectly on iOS 4

But now it has problems.

When i start the music player it works fine, but when i get a song that has low volume and it needs to scale up the volume, it doesn't work.

i need to go back to the Music settings, turn the Sound Check off and then back on again for it to work.

After some songs it magicly happens again, i have to go back to settings, etc.

It seems to happen when a song has low volume.

It works fine on my MacBook Pro with 10.7.2

I closed all other apps on my phone so nothing could mess things up, but nothing helps.

i use iVolume to adjust the volume on my songs.

Hope someone can help me out.

There were different problems reported throughout this thread, but the initial problem of soundcheck suddenly stopping to do it's job (in my case each time I skip a track) has indeed been fixed. I'm using the gold master since about a week and soundcheck hasn't failed a single time since then (see my previous post), both on the iPhone and iPad.

No I never had this problem. Souncheck either did it's job, or it stopped completely and songs just played at the normal volume. Maybe that was what you noticed in different audio levels?

I must also note that I did not use iTunes to scan my files, but replaygain (using foobar2000) and mp3tag (using it's "rg2sc" function in my own script). iTunes scans files individually instead of the average volume over each album (and does a bad job at it), so turning on soundcheck when listening to an album could actually cause tracks to appear too loud or too low. If it's always the same tracks that have this effect for you, soundcheck might have worked as intended all the time - within the limits of iTunes' scanner.

Using the album gain keeps tracks at their original volume over the entire album, but still works great when mixing tracks from different albums.

As far as I know this is and was always the case for all iPods (in their various forms, including iPhone) so far: The volume adjustment is not exactly "in sync" with the beginning of a new song, so it might be off for a fraction of a second (maybe a tenth or so - it's really short). I guess this is because audio playing is done by playing some ring buffer, but volume adjustment by setting some hardware equalizer settings. But usually this is not a big problem, because nearly all songs begin more or less silently. Do you really have songs that "explosively" start at a high volume level?

Yes, it would be fine if this could be done EXACTLY right if possible, but for me that's not a big deal. And this problem is independent of the bug in iOS 5 that this thread is all about.

Oh, and I forgot to add: I do apologise for having tracks that start explosively but I'm afraid musicians have been crafting music like that for quite some time. (Wagner? Or is it Bethoven? I'm sure someone will correct me.) Bottom line is: I'm not going to limit my choice in music to suit what is basically poorly-crafted software.

As for expecting Sound Check to work "EXACTLY right", why not? Why shouldn't we demand that a product works correctly? Why shouldn't we demand perfection? After all, we have all paid a premium price for our iPods and iPhones.

I agree with "vet in the house". I never got this problem until iOS 5, and yes, there a lot of tunes out there that starts not so quietly and this issue is, at least for me, worst than the volume problem after skipping a song on the playlist.

I didn't updated any of my devices and I only will after this problem got completly fixed once and for all! I really don't see the point to update it. We lost Google Maps on the process and there's some rough edges to fix on the system like some people reports, like the wifi problem.

There other question about some considered "old" devices to get a system update. I think someone else already talked about this, the ipod case. People who owns an ipod 3g will be very angry and with reason. The iphone 3gs got this update, why the ipod not?

So, the only option to me is wait a bit longer.
