Ok. I have a definitive answer for this. This works on ATT for both the 4S and iPhone 5 and should be similar for other carriers.

1) Dial 611

2) speak to an associate and have them disable visual voicemail for the phone number associated with your device.

3) reboot your phone.

4) open the phone app and click on the voicemail button

5) eventually you will get a message saying that visual voicemail is disabled.

6) go to the dial pad.

7) enter *5005*86*+1xxxxxxxxxx# (xxxxxxxxxx is your 10 digit voicemail access number)

8) hit send. You will get a little loading circle for a fraction of a second....

The end

The +1 might be different for outside of the USA

it seems the arricle you listed talks about how to fix visual voicemail. I wish to change the number dailed by the iPhone when the voicemail button is pressed. so far, have tried all the codes, and resetting network settings, and still nothing has worked. i called Verizon today to ask them to diasble Visual Voicemail from my account altogether, and was told that is not a Verizon issue. that Apple forces visual voicemail asnthe only voicemail option.

i already have Google voice successfully working. the issue now is somehow changing the number launched from the voicemail button.

In my opnion the whole issue is about Carrier Profiles. That is something the mobile operator puts on your phone and enables of disables various functions. Most operator helpdesk employees don't know about this and the Apple Genius people don't have a clue as well. This is something between Apple and the worldwide Mobile Operators and Apple does not want to reveal anything about it, or want to give the user back the control over it's own iPhone.....

This is also the reason that the experiences that different people over the word describing in this stream are so different.

Well, the "code" obviously works for 2 kind of device/carriers:

1. Your device is older than an iphone 5, it should work on any carrier (at least it did on my 4 and 4s on all iOS versions)

2. You are using a carrier without a carrier profile, meaning that there is no "Voicemail" Number coded into the carrier bundle and you are using an iPhone 5: No chance, nothing will work, this is confirmed by 6 other guys I know that bought it (as I did) unlocked from Apple in Europe, using it on a European MVNO.

I really think that if I buy an unlocked device, I should be in full control of my settings. Either Apple allows me to create my own carrier profile or at least give me a friggin way to let me put any voicemail number into the device I bought unlocked!

Still nothing works.

I´ve come to the conclusion that Apple gives a rats *** about people that buy their phone for good money. Obviously they want to us to buy it from a specific provider and not use it freely.

Well, good for Apple. I did the logical step and sold my iphone 5 and the first time since 2007 bought a non Apple phone....android seems more convenient with me setting up my phone the way I like it.

After all these years they still offer not simple solution to just enter my VM number and be able to use that fricking button.
