How can I setup my Voicemail number in the iPhone 4S to allow a call to my voicemail from the voicemail button ?
iPhone 4, iOS 5
Ok. I have a definitive answer for this. This works on ATT for both the 4S and iPhone 5 and should be similar for other carriers.
1) Dial 611
2) speak to an associate and have them disable visual voicemail for the phone number associated with your device.
3) reboot your phone.
4) open the phone app and click on the voicemail button
5) eventually you will get a message saying that visual voicemail is disabled.
6) go to the dial pad.
7) enter *5005*86*+1xxxxxxxxxx# (xxxxxxxxxx is your 10 digit voicemail access number)
8) hit send. You will get a little loading circle for a fraction of a second....
The end
To get the + hold down 0
The +1 might be different for outside of the USA
Any update to this for iPhone 5 with iOS6? I tried all the codes listed for the 4S and no joy.
had this on my iphone 5.
after I found this it works again: (basically leave yourself a VM)

I also reset network settings on the way, that might helped it too.
it seems the arricle you listed talks about how to fix visual voicemail. I wish to change the number dailed by the iPhone when the voicemail button is pressed. so far, have tried all the codes, and resetting network settings, and still nothing has worked. i called Verizon today to ask them to diasble Visual Voicemail from my account altogether, and was told that is not a Verizon issue. that Apple forces visual voicemail asnthe only voicemail option.
i already have Google voice successfully working. the issue now is somehow changing the number launched from the voicemail button.
I spoke to a Customer service supervisor today and was told that it is not possible to disable visual voicemail. they claim its something Apple restricts and while it might have worked in previous iPhones, no more for the 5.
In my opnion the whole issue is about Carrier Profiles. That is something the mobile operator puts on your phone and enables of disables various functions. Most operator helpdesk employees don't know about this and the Apple Genius people don't have a clue as well. This is something between Apple and the worldwide Mobile Operators and Apple does not want to reveal anything about it, or want to give the user back the control over it's own iPhone.....
This is also the reason that the experiences that different people over the word describing in this stream are so different.
Exactly, they should at least allow the more advanced users to either set their own voicemail number (like basically everyone else does) or allow me to build my own carrier icc File.
Dillon from Salt Lake City is correct. After updating a 3Gs currently on gophone to iOS 6, the voicemail icon stopped dialing to voicemail.
Ran e procedure exactly as described, including all the asterisks, plus and pound signs and worked.
I imagine that you could enter any number.
Well, the "code" obviously works for 2 kind of device/carriers:
1. Your device is older than an iphone 5, it should work on any carrier (at least it did on my 4 and 4s on all iOS versions)
2. You are using a carrier without a carrier profile, meaning that there is no "Voicemail" Number coded into the carrier bundle and you are using an iPhone 5: No chance, nothing will work, this is confirmed by 6 other guys I know that bought it (as I did) unlocked from Apple in Europe, using it on a European MVNO.
I really think that if I buy an unlocked device, I should be in full control of my settings. Either Apple allows me to create my own carrier profile or at least give me a friggin way to let me put any voicemail number into the device I bought unlocked!
Ladies and Gentlemen
you may want to flag this issue in a formal 10 million is applications can impress
Incidentally Andoid ii windows is not a problem - you hold enter and you have a fully functional button
I always used this code in all my previous iPhones and worked fine. Too bad my phone is unlocked and my voicemail a dumb key as long as I'm not a client anymore of the so called "big companies". FAIL!
The codes *5006*86*[vm]# only programs the Voicemail button on the phone screen. The numbers you put in for [vm] will dial any number...this should have no way of knowing what country you are in.
The code *5006*86*18056377243# worked to program the voicemail button for use on t-mobile in the USA on my iPhone 4S

Hello,
Any news for iOS 6.x.x? None of provided/codes tips works for me... Probably all of them works only for iOS 5.x.x not for iOS 6.x.x
Please help...
Marcin
Still nothing works.
I´ve come to the conclusion that Apple gives a rats *** about people that buy their phone for good money. Obviously they want to us to buy it from a specific provider and not use it freely.
Well, good for Apple. I did the logical step and sold my iphone 5 and the first time since 2007 bought a non Apple phone....android seems more convenient with me setting up my phone the way I like it.
After all these years they still offer not simple solution to just enter my VM number and be able to use that fricking button.
In fact I don't want to change number... I want to disable it. Most annoying is touching voicemail button by mistake... but my voicemail call is NOT free of charge (Provider T-Mobile in Poland)!
Maybe there is possibility to disable voicemail permanently?
