Same problem here (USA) can not find a way to program the Voice Mail number into the voice mail button. I have a Apple unlocked 4S. Called Apple and the guy was very nice but said he had not heard of this problem before. I suggested he Google it. He did and said WOW. The Apple Engineers must be working on this problem...

In the mean time have set up a contact for voice mail. That works.

I came across this forum looking for the answer and Subaru Driver's code does work, but I think it's the code you're using to access voicemail. I'm also in Cayman on LIME, and when I got my Blackberry a year ago they told me not to use 123 and to use 269 for some reason! This is what I did to make it work:

*5008*68*+*269*

Hope this helps!

Like Jo Dunne, I came across this forum looking for the answer and after trying a few suggestions, this works for me. I'm in New Zealand and my mobile service provider is 2degrees. To access voicemail from my mobile, I just dial 202 and it is the same number whilst roaming. The following code works for me:

**5005*86*202#

Hope this will be useful.

OK. Here's the deal:

On the (well actually, it doesn't matter which iPhone or IOS it is,)iPhone 3G, 4G, AND 4GS you'd type in *5005*86*+1XXXYYYZZZZ# then hit call. You'll see the screen flash for a split second then you'll see the same screen with what you typed. The thing here is the +1XXXYYYZZZZ number you have to type is the "Voicemail Retreival Number," (NOT YPUR CELLPHONE NUMBER,) provided by your service provider. You should be able to get it from them, as they will give you your "local" voicemail Retreival number. In my case, as I live in Alberta Canada, Fido (my service provider) gave me this number:

1 (403) 401-2089

That is the "general" voicemail Retreival number for Alberta. AFAIK, I'm not being charged long distance, even though I live in Edmonton with an area code of 780, whereas 403 is for Calgary.

This WILL help.

BTW, that other code *#5005*86*+1XXXYYYZZZZ# was unrecognized by my service provider, maybe Apple knows, but... I didn't use it. I used *5005*86*+14034012089# <call>. Remember this number I've provided is for Fido only in Alberta Canada.

Hi Wladyka68

For you this might work, but for a lot of others, who have Carrier Profiles installed on their iPhone by their mobile service provider, the code is disabled on the iPhone. You say the code *#5005*86*... is not recopgnized by your service provider. But the code is not seen by the service provider at all. The code is an internal instruction to the iPhone to change the behaviour of the [Voicemail] button in the Phone app.

The codes are as follows:

**5005*86*1<vm># Instruct the iPhone to call the number <vm> when the [Voicemail] button is pressed

(the iPhone screen flashes briefly to indicate the command is accepted)

*#5005*86# Check the <vm> number that was used in the last **5005*86* command

(the iPhone shows a black screen, with the number <vm> in the middle)

##5005*86* Clear the <vm> number to be used when the [Voicemail] button is pressed

(when checked with *#5005... the iPhone only briefly flashes)

The above behaviour is for all iPhones, but when disabled by a Carrier Profile from your mobile service provider, the [Voicemail] button behaviour does not change. The request to Apple is to enable the [Voicemail] button behaviour, regardless of Carrier Profile, or even better, provide a GUI function for the [Voicemail] button behaviour, regardless of Carrier Profile.

Even when the Carrier supports Visual Voicemail, or if not, when the mobile service provider programs its own Voicemail number to use in its Carrier Profile, the owner of the iPhone should be able to have the freedom to choose its own voicemail provider and program the Voicemail button accordingly, or just shut its behaviour down.

Thanks for the list of numbers/commands fritsn

After a few itterations of the string you posted to set the iPhone (in my case 3GS) VM number I found one which worked.

I'm in Japan, using a jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the NTT Docomo network, VM#: 1417

This is what worked for me: **5005*86*1417#

The *#5005*86# (check last VM#) command works as you posted it, thanks again so much for your help.
