@ tbertran:

The problem is not solved at all. I've got an AirPortExpress with the latest firmware version 7.6. The AirPortExpress is configured to connect to an existing WLAN. However, the iPhone 4s is crashing the WLAN when using airplay on the iPhone. The WLAN collapses, consequently the AirPort Express unit disconnects, too (as the WLAN is offline). Please note, the whole setup works perferctly when using an ipod touch with airplay enabled. So there must be something wrong with the iPhone 4s...

The issue was not fixed by iOS 5.01 but it appears to have been fixed by the new firmwares on my Airport Base Station and on the Express (7.5.6 I believe it is).

I tested it on 2 different set-ups and, each time, the Airport firware upgrade is what did the trick.

I thought so, too, but it doesn't. Try to play some music for a while. Leave the range of your base station and return. Try to play it again, it's back to crashing.

ditto here, definitely not fixed. I am running 5.0.1 and 7.6.

I made a genius bar appointment this saturday and went in. The genius said Apple knows about the problem, they have a new wireless chip in the iPhone4s that is likely the culprit, their bug tracking system has the bug with supporting diagnostic info etc. So... cross your fingers that a fix comes soon as they are officially aware of the problem.

OK here is what I found out today whilst testing this out for several hours. In a nutshell this problem appears to be problem with the 4S hardware.

I restored my old iPhone 4 running IOS 5.0.1 and this combination of hardware and software worked as expected for several hours this afternoon without any issues. I left the house for 15 minutes and was able to recommence playing music through my Zeppelin Air without a hitch upon my return.

Swapped over to my 4S running IOS 5.0.1 and it wouldn't play through the speaker even though it said it was connected and playing but there was no sound coming through the Zeppelin. I have managed to connect the 4S to the Zeppelin a few times but I have needed to restart my router, the Zeppelin Air and the 4S and then it wasn't guaranteed to work but I have had some success, if you can call that a success?

Not sure if the issue is with the processor in the 4S but it definetly appears to be a harware issue, hopefully Apple can get to the bottom of this and fix the issue with a firmware update if not then we could possibly be seeing a recall of the 4S to rectify the hardware at fault.

My issue is that the new IOS 5.1 is not allowing me to use my Verizon MIFI with Facetime with either my iPhone 4S or iPad 2. I'm able to connect to the internet using my WIFI connection with Verizon MIFI but as soon as I use Facetime, I'm able to video chat for about a minute or two, then bam, the connection stops. When I try to connect to the internet, I no longer can connect. If I turn the WIFI off and on, the iDevice is no longer recognized by the Verizon MIFI, I get a message that the password is incorrect. I have to then turn off the the Verizon MIFI and only then will the iDevice connect seamslessly with the Verizon MIFI. I have never had an issue with the Verizon MIFI before I upgraded my devices to IOS 5.

I also have a Clear iSpot device for my WIFI and it works fine. I can Facetime and surf the web where the Verizon MIFI couldn't. I believe the problem lies in the IOS 5 and how it deals with WIFI.

I have also contacted Apple and the problem they were supposedly not aware of. He advised for me to go into Apple Store to see if they can help and that they can potentially replace the 4S with a new one. However I feel that this wouldn't actually resolve the problem as I know numerous people as well as everyone in this thread with issues isolated to iPhone 4S. I wonder if it is a different wifi chip inside causing this? Will keep you all updated with any progress.

I have spent days trying to get to the route of the issue with my iPhone 4 S and my B&W Zeppelin Air. Thier support engeineers in the netherlands say theyre even prepared to come to my flat to investigate the issue, but it works flawlessly with my iPad and Mac and PC. It's just as soon as i try with the iphone 4S that's the end. it's a disaster.

They tell me today that Apple IS aware of the issue - theyve had written infromation from Apple, and they are working at it apparently.

Apple's support teams really need a memo so they dont spew ignorance out.

If this is a hardware issue, then ill go insane as there is no Apple store in Belgium and any after pruchase support is a disaster. (said from bitter previous experience)

Ok folks, so in the email that Apple sent me today, they asked for me to get the crash logs and the console output that occurs when the airplay issue happens. So, I just opened up the iPhone config utility and opened the console. Then, connecting to my iHome iW1, I saw a bunch of errors start popping up. Here's a (rather large) snippet of one block of errors. Notice the bolded areas.

Awesome research! Hopefully this helps them in determining the cause of the problem.

I'm still having the same problems as before, however the problem is that the iPhone 4S keep dropping the network that the AirPlay speakers are connected to... which will obviously result in audio stopping. Every time audio stops, if I go into Settings and Wifi the iPhone has booted me off the network and joined another one in the process.

This as mentioned by numerous other people on this thread is SPECIFIC to the iPhone 4S and doesn't happen on other iPhone's, iPod touch's or iPad's, running the exact same software version? I have just double double checked this, as usually this would be router specific but in this case it certainly isn't.

Nov 17, 2011 7:57 AM in response to kieranfromworthing

I have a linksys E4200 runing 1.0.3 firmware, Airport express, iPhone4S 5.0, and macbook pro. I first noticed that when I went to use airfoil to play music from a web browser to my AE it crashed the wifi. I quit all the apps and the wifi came back. Then I noticed I couldn't play music in itunes over airplay. Same symptoms, it says connecting to AE and crashes the wifi.

I tried from my 4S and it does the same thing. I then noticed on my ethernet win7 box when it crashes the wifi the linksys E4200 is flashing and I have no internet. It's taking the entire router or LAN down.

Doesn't matter if I use airfoil, itunes, or music app on the 4S it crashes.

If I reboot the airport express I can generally play music just fine from my phone or laptop. If you leave the wifi network and try to connect later it will just hang and crash the wifi.

So weird because everything worked great for the past month or so I've owned this iPhone4 and I had no issues for years before that. The only change I've made to the wifi is I updated from 1.0.2 to 1.0.3 and while it was around the time of the problem I think it was a conicidence.
