Ipad 1 slows down after installing IOS 5

Adter installing IOS 5 my Ipad 1 slows down considerably. Apps take time to start and especially the writing is so slow that I actually I cannot use the Pad anyomore. I udgraded only because I could not update imoorstant apps (keypad, pages) anymore with the old operating system. But this is no solution. Anyone elseexperiencing this problem or am I the only one?

My experience with a gen 1 3G iPad. I waited until yesterday to update from 4.2.1 to 5.0.1. I wanted to first see how this thread ended up. I looked at a few comments and felt any slowdown was more an issue with the updating process rather than iOS 5. All I wanted was tabbed browsing in Safari so waiting was no big deal.

What I did was restored the iPad as a new iPad. I then turned off all Notifications (see gs_rivera) and deleted my iCloud account. Resynced fresh, not from a backup. Yes, this is a pita way to have to do an update but a once a year restore is not a bad idea.

My results are excellent. The only place I see any slowdown is in the Settings app. Its takes a bit longer to load. Some aspects of the iPad are a bit quicker. Every app I've used, about 75 plus all of Apple's, are excellent.

While I know its not a fun way to do an update, if you want your iPad back to what it was like, I would really recommend you take this approach. Every thread I've read both on Apple's boards and thru Googling indicate doing various approaches to a restore brings the gen 1 iPad back to its former self.

As far as I can tell, this seems to be the fixes that has worked for most:

  • Update to iOS 5.0.1
  • Reset the device (you loose some settings, but apps will still be installed) as advised by rick1972:

Here is what he did to my iPad 1 to make it usable again. He went to settings /general/reset/restore all settings and did a resore as new iPad. It didn't destroy any data, I just had to redo my network passwords and a couple of other minor app settings here and there.

When the iPad has restarted after the reset described above, do not use a backup from iCloud or iTunes, but install "as new". The apps will be there, but some settings (WLAN, GameCenter, etc) will need to configured again.

My iPad was unusable, but after the update and reset I can use it again.

I have the same slowness issue with email. The speed is simply unacceptable now. I often have to force quit Mail to "kick it back on". I wonder if I could "go back" to OS4 without losing anything?

Other and using iCloud to sync my Mac and my iPhone (all upgraded), all I really do is email and surf a little. Could I still use iCloud if I dropped back to OS4 on the iPad?

Is upgrading iPad 1 a quiet ploy to force users to buy an newer iPad 2 ?
