Ipad 1 slows down after installing IOS 5

Adter installing IOS 5 my Ipad 1 slows down considerably. Apps take time to start and especially the writing is so slow that I actually I cannot use the Pad anyomore. I udgraded only because I could not update imoorstant apps (keypad, pages) anymore with the old operating system. But this is no solution. Anyone elseexperiencing this problem or am I the only one?

I have the same problem, my iPad is much slower than before in all aspects. Another thing i do not like is how Safari is now. The former version with the screens is much nicer, now it looks like Explorer.

walterfromvienna, I installed Process Killer app and it did open up a lot of memory. It didn't seem to have much effect on Safari text entry performance though.

But, after poking around, I found that somehow more than 400 broken links to Instapaper had appeared in the Bookmarks Bar bookmark list and had been synced between my Mac and iPad. After deleting them from the Mac and then replacing all the bookmarks on the iPad by doing the one-time bookmark replacement sync from iTunes, the Safari text entry performance was much improved. No doubt the freed up memory also contributed to the improvement. I believe the multitude of broken bookmark links somehow happened in the process of moving to iCloud and then syncing, but I don't really know. I know that they weren't in the Bookmarks Bar before though.

Thank you for your help! I know that I will use Process Killer before launching memory intensive apps in the future.

I was instructed to restore from iTunes, by the Apple support official techies. Then when asked,to as though, **New iPad**, to mark the box.

Then restore Apps etc from the previous Backup.

This helped considerably. No more crashes.

I only lost the few text "notes"

All else was preserved.

Had to re install the " contacts" from the Pc.

This is rather like a reformat of H D on a P C, I think. But you should have a Backup on the iTunes.

Also, just to be sure I turned off the Notifications and for the time being, the iCloud.

Good Luck,

Geoff

I've been experiencing the same slow downs described here with my iPad 1. I used the Informit app and it showed only 72 MB of RAM available. I restarted the iPad and the app reported the same amount of RAM. No difference. Things are so bad that Safari crashes everytime I use it and some apps won't launch. Hopefully an update will be the remedy. I don't want the product I paid a pretty penny to own, to suddenly, after a year or two, being treated like a red-headed-step-child.

I was so fed up of this situation and decided to go to the Apple store last night in Regent street, London. I explained the situation to the guy at the genius bar and when he could verify with his eyes how slow the iPad was he started saying that when this happens is because there was an underlying issue in the processor. What? I couldn't help it and I asked him if it was a coincidence that all my friends who have an iPad 1 and have upgraded to iOS5 are experiencing the same problem. How can this be a coincidence. He said, if hundreds of people have this problem this is normal, considering the amount of iPad they sell...at that point I realised that there was no point to carry on my discussion and that I was wasting my time. I was talking to a simple robot that was instructed to say what he said (funny I could hear other people at the genious bar explaining the same problems with their iPad 1 and getting the same answer).

So, assuming that this is true, Apple has the right to sell iPads with underlying processors issues and customers will only realise this little surprise when their warranty is expired and they upgrade their software.

I didn't expect this from Apple and I felt really betrayed.

Same problem here on both iPad and iPhone. Major lockups and slowdown with the music app. Sync after update didn't automatically restore my stuff the way it was before. Every app I'd ever downloaded was sent to the iPad and none of my music was restored. When I resynced I've ended up with incorrect artwork showing for about 20% of my albums, and there doesn't seem to be any way to get the art back in stnc. Really hoping 5.1 will resolve a lot of the problems.

I have noticed the same thing, my iPad1 is slow after iOS5, and apps crash all the time. I have been reading about the "solutions", but turning off notifications or the iCloud service is not a solution, afterall that's what iOS5 is all about.

I am quite annoyed that the iPad1, not an old device by any means has been left in the dust by Apple already. Not only has iOS5 slowed everything down, there is no multi gestures, no airplay mirroring, the features that the iPad2 has. Look I do understand certain features need more computing power etc., but I repeat, the iPad1 is not old.

I am not about to buy a new iPad every year Apple, so by not being fair, and providing the same features to all devices is bad marketing! Yours is not the only tablet on the market these days. You have a very good thing going, don't ruin it!

I LOVE my iPad and can't stop singing it's praises but I WILL NOT buy a new iPad everyear to keep up, that's just ridiculous and is a bad consumer mentality.

Today I called the german (i'm from there) support to get a valid information on the IOS 5 perfomance issue - which in my eyes is not a speculation or a singular issue but real. The agent rightaway tried to connect me to his officer, so that told me a lot. I guess, apple is pretty sure aware about the issue, even the fact that there was no need to explain my problem furthermore. The connect to his senior was not possible because inbound traffic was very high. Conclusion: Apple is aware of the issue. I think a honest information: "we f**cked it up and working on a patch would be helpful, i would wait the patiently for the update patch. Apple looks much like MS at their VISTA times, thought they could do better (concerning quality and communication), but this happens when the $€$ is ruling too much.

There's No doubt the iPad 1 has been slowed down by iOS5, VERY Disappointing!

There has to be more background processes running now that are really slowing down the system.

Apple needs to address this issue.. quickly.

I'm also experiencing crashes with Safari every once it awhile, I'll google search of click on a link and Safari will just close on me. I can then open it right back up again but it's irritating and no reason to be acting this way now.

I've rebooted, cleared the programs out of the multi-tasking list, tossed the cookies and cleaned the cache, doesn't seem to matter, still doing the same thing. I also noticed angry birds now looks like stop-frame photography, it's no longer smooth flowing action.

If they can't make it better, at least allow us a choice to return back to the last usable iOS version.

Mark me down as having the same issues as everyone else. As a matter off fact, my Safari app crashed while browsing this very thread!

I hate to put on my tinfoil hat, but this seems like an obvious play to get people upgraded to the iPad 2.

I haven't tried the few recommended solutions as of yet. frankly, it took long enough to upgrade the iPad, and I don't have hours to waste trying to troubleshoot a sluggish and almost useless device. Also, turning off the key features of the new OS seems pointless. Why make the OS available on older generation devices if this is what it would do to them.

Here's to hoping the next iOS update fixes things.

Oct 29, 2011 11:24 PM in response to hgaertner

I tried switching off all the iCloud services. It improves the performance a little bit, but it is still very sluggish. Definitely, ios5 has been designed with the purpose of making us write off our iPads 1 and move to iPad 2, which is a scam, as the hardware is working perfectly. I've kept another iPad 1 with the original OS and the user experience is great... Food for thought.

Just sent my complaints to Apple via your link - we should all do this. It's really a shame not even able to go back to ios 4 while waiting for a ios5 update which works for ipad 1 (if there ever will be one ;-).

I have the same complaints and effects as mentioned above like sluggish performance in mail, safari. Definitive bugs in photo (no picturs shown in events requiring restarting the app or changing tabs) and iCal (necessary to browse back and forth to see appointments).

Hoping for 5.1...
