New iPhone 4s - most calls connect without sound

Hi Guys

I've just purchased a brand new iPhone 4s from Vodafone, on most occaisions when I make an outbound call the call will connect but I can't hear anything unless I toggle the speakerphone on/ off. As soon as I do this everything is fine and i can hear the person I've just called (through the earpiece).

Seems to be 8 out of 10 calls made will behave like this. The rest of the time, the phone works as expected.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Note:

I've done a hard reset and restored from itunes with no luck.

The ear speaker works all the time for inbound calls

Any tips would be greatfully appreciated!

I have had the same problem with my iPhone 4S 64GB since day 1. The bottom mic intermittently quits working. It fails for making phone calls, fails in the Voice Memos app, and fails when using siri. With siri, it goes into listening mode, but the volume doesn't react on the little purple mic, and my attempt to use siri fails because no sound was recorded. If I switch to speaker phone during a call, the other person can hear me. Sometimes, during the course of the phone call, if I switch back and forth between speaker and regular mic, the mic begins working again. I think it has more to do with time passing than the act of switching between speaker and mic. When the mic isn't working, I found that it does barely detect sound, but only if I blow directly into the mic or yell into the mic. It hears me, but the sound is very distorted. I confirmed this by calling a friend and also by using the Voice Memo app.

I have an issue where the speaker icon becomes selected during a call and I cannot hear the person i'm dialling, and they cannot hear me.

I think I have worked it out that it only occurs when I plug my phone into my car stereo (through an iPhone cable, not Aux), listen to some music, then disconnect it and try to make an outbound call (even if the call is not immediately after the disconnection).

I'm not 100% sure that it is always the case, but since I started noting when it occurs, it has always been correct.

For the record, I have a Pioneer car stereo.

Does this sound the same for anyone else?

Update. I was facing the same problems.

-No outgoing audio 20% of calls

-Echo

-Sometimes on the other side they couldnt hear me

I went to my carrier in my country cuz here we dont have apple store. I went to T mobile , and they took the phone for testing. They test it and found nothing , they just preinstaled ios. I am using my iphone for 5 days now , and there is no robotic sound , no outgoing audio and everything works perfect, i am still testing it now, but no problems . They said if i am facing the same problem again to call them and then they will take my iphone and send it to Hungary for replacement, and i will have to wait for a week or to for new one. I hope that will not happend, so till now no issues i was facing after T-Mobile preinstaled 5.0.1 ios

Clearly looks like I'm not the only one with this really irritating problem! I am not having a good experience with Vodafone (calls regularly being dropped) or with Apple (having to toggle the speakerphone when making calls), although both could feasibly be hardware related. Hopefully a software update will resolve these issues. One other annoying thing is that my 4S mutes the mic occasionally when I am in a call, which I have never had on previous generations of iPhone.

I'm on Vodafone in the UK.

I bought the white 16 GB model 2 days ago and the problem started on the very first day of operating. I thought it was the network but the following day I couldn't make a call for more than 15 times. The SPEAKER always comes on and I can hear the person on the other side while they can't hear me. Whether they called or I did.

I went to Vodafone Egypt where I bought it from, they took it for a week and said they'd come back to me with whether it is faulty or not. I was FURIOUS because I bought this phone to enjoy it not to wait for it to get fixed. Not to mention that they have mentioned that "APPLE in EGYPT" don't refund any products.

I really hope Apple solves this problem and issues a world wide statement to all dealers and resellers to return the device and exchange it for a new one IF this problem occured with the consumer.

If I understand correctly, the phones themselves are made in more than one location? I'm wondering if the problem is connected to a specific factory. I ordered my first 4S directly from Apple Canada and it had all the dial-out/speaker problems noted here, with the same workarounds that didn't always work. I exchanged it for a new phone from the Apple store here in town and it works the way it's supposed to. Just wondering if it depends which factory it was made in.
