New iPhone 4s - most calls connect without sound

Hi Guys

I've just purchased a brand new iPhone 4s from Vodafone, on most occaisions when I make an outbound call the call will connect but I can't hear anything unless I toggle the speakerphone on/ off. As soon as I do this everything is fine and i can hear the person I've just called (through the earpiece).

Seems to be 8 out of 10 calls made will behave like this. The rest of the time, the phone works as expected.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Note:

I've done a hard reset and restored from itunes with no luck.

The ear speaker works all the time for inbound calls

Any tips would be greatfully appreciated!

SOLVED (for me at least) - For what it's worth, I've been having the same problem. I spoke with apple support and they had me "reset all settings" (not just network settings) and to my disbelief this seems to have solved the problem. Prior to the reset I was able to reproduce the issue anytime I wanted by simply dialing a number and IMMEDIATELY and putting the phone to my ear. It was as if the proximity sensor was detecting the "raise to speak" in order to invoke Siri and thus it disabled the speaker while enabling the microphone, though I have no proof of that, it seemed to fit the scenario. Also, note that if I wanted to avoid the issue happening I could dial the call and NOT raise the phone to my ear until I could here the ring back from the phone call, at that point the speaker worked fine.

I'll report back here if the problem comes back.

This problem didn't resolve itself after downloading the IOS update, so I exchanged my phone at the Apple store this weekend. Touch wood it seems to be working fine now. Just prior to the exchange the camera started to glitch as well, so maybe my first device was just generally buggy.

I would recommend at least trying out a new phone. BryanParke's observations about a possible Siri conflict make sense as well. Hopefully Apple will acknowledge & fix the problem sooner than later.

I am having the same problem. My phone is 4S 16g with bell Canada. I have tried every thing, the only way could make it work temperory was hitting the speaker on and then off immediately.

This has to be a hardware issue. I will call bell Canada on Monday and ask for a replacement. We hahaving this issue since oct 28 that when the phone was activated. I don't know if the sim card has to do anything with it.

I have had an iphone for 3 years now just got the 4s. I am having the same problems EVERYDAY and it is so frustrating. This is the worst phone I have ever had and am thinking about switching. The new iOS update did not but screw with my phone more it seem. I am growing more upset with Apple everyday and expected more from this company, what a shame and disappointment their response has been to this issue.

interesting tidbit. though i am sure most of you are pretty savvy in the way of the iPhone, but the issue with my mom's outgoing calls was very simple. brace yourselves: my mom likes to leave the plastic shield over the face of her iphone. she did this with her last one - had it for a year like that. turns out, a piece of the plastic shield actually overlaps into the speaker to protect it. removed the protector - voila. phone fine.

sometimes it's the simple things. but i too have left cling plastic to my phone - never thought of checking that.
