New iPhone 4s - most calls connect without sound

Hi Guys

I've just purchased a brand new iPhone 4s from Vodafone, on most occaisions when I make an outbound call the call will connect but I can't hear anything unless I toggle the speakerphone on/ off. As soon as I do this everything is fine and i can hear the person I've just called (through the earpiece).

Seems to be 8 out of 10 calls made will behave like this. The rest of the time, the phone works as expected.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Note:

I've done a hard reset and restored from itunes with no luck.

The ear speaker works all the time for inbound calls

Any tips would be greatfully appreciated!

I was at the Genius Bar last night. The employee there was very aware of the problem and said that it's most likely a software issue that Apple may address in the next update of IOS 5. She offered to give me another phone that evening but couldn't guarantee it wouldn't have the same problem. We agreed that I would wait for the IOS 5 update and come back to try a new phone if the problem doesn't resolve itself.

I had the same problem. iPhone 4S 64GB on O2 UK.

Returned it to Apple Store last week, and I have not had a problem since, other than I call dropped after 20mins.

The signal bars disappeared completely for about 10 secs then cam e back. On other phone on O2 still had signal...............Apple need to work on the firmware side here, call dropping has been awful on iPhone's since the original............4S seems like a big improvement, but not as reliable as Nokia's, HTC's, Samsungs.

See this veeeeeeeeeery long thread.

I advise to move all further comments on this thread, to the above established thread, so problems and solutions are easier to track.

It's an issue with hundreds of phones. Some claim it's software related, some hardware, some say it's a mixture of both.

Some people have had temporary success with quitting the Phone.app / restoring as a new phone / restoring from an iCloud backup / disabling Siri / toggling speakerphone on & off...

Unfortunately all of the above only been temporary, with the problem recurring again after a few calls, or a few days etc.

So far the only solution that seems permanent has been to replace the phone. But even so, it's the luck of the draw to recieve a functional phone, and not another faulty one.

I'm completely annoyed as there is no Apple Store near me...... and Apple haven't even acknowledged the issue, despite the above thread being 34 pages long, as of writing.

Same problem, bought iphone 4 64GB from singapore, I aws not able to hear incoming calls or outgoing call on using hand set. I could hear them only on speaker phone or heading phone. It is quite embarrising to talk in public as other can hear my conversation if I put it on my speaker phone. I reinstalled and upgraded my software to IOS5 but the problem is still persisting. I am repenting why I bought an apple as no one is addressing to this problem.

I will never by an apple product any more, and would advise other also the same. APPLE A DAY NEEDS A DOCTOR ANYWAY.

I have the AT&T 64GB Black iPhone.

I have the outgoing audio problem about 10% of the time, but only when not using my car bluetooth or headset.

I have another audio issue: on incoming calls about half the time, after 20-30 seconds of coversation the calling party cannot hear me. This does not happen when I use bluetooth or speaker, only using the in-phone earpiece. I can hear them, they cannot hear me at all.

I also have an AT&T Microcell and notice the battery runs down quite quickly when the phone is connected to it.

The incoming audio issue still happens after the 5.01 update.

My phone is my business, and this is horrible and costing me money.

My 2nd phone has done 50+ calls over 1 week and not ran into this issue yet. Contact Apple and explain the problem and shortly after you will be given and replacement. They claim to be unaware of this issue, but sure replace the phones fast with little questions. It's either awesome service, or a clear problem with the first batch of Iphone 4S's. Take it back to where you got it, or contact Apple for a replacement!
