New iPhone 4s - most calls connect without sound

Hi Guys

I've just purchased a brand new iPhone 4s from Vodafone, on most occaisions when I make an outbound call the call will connect but I can't hear anything unless I toggle the speakerphone on/ off. As soon as I do this everything is fine and i can hear the person I've just called (through the earpiece).

Seems to be 8 out of 10 calls made will behave like this. The rest of the time, the phone works as expected.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Note:

I've done a hard reset and restored from itunes with no luck.

The ear speaker works all the time for inbound calls

Any tips would be greatfully appreciated!

So glad to hear I'm not the only one having this problem!

I have a new 4S 32GB on Vodafone and often experience calls where they connect but there is no sound. It took my a while to figure out that toggling the speakerphone makes it work.

I am hopefuly that since it's intermittent it is a software bug of some sort. I also have Viber and Skype installed. Maybe I'll uninstall them for a while and see if the problem reoccurs.

Having the same issue, make a call and there are different levels for me sometimes I can hear the person they cant hear me, sometimes we cant hear eachother, toggling the spearker button works most of the time, but by the time you do that the person hangs up the phone. so its not a solution... the Sad part of my post is I already took it back to the apple store, they told me that its an unverified problem even though I made a call gave it to the girl I spoke to and she could not hear the person until the speaker button was hit, she also told me she never heard of this before..... They replaced me with a new 4s, and I still experience the issue with the new phone, the notes on my record state that they replaced the phone with an unverified issue...... as im walking out of the apple there is another customer explaining the same issue to another apple employee.... not sure what to do, if I book another appointment i dont feel its going to help! but i guess its the only way.

It's so weird that we all get treated like we're the only ones with this problem when we seek carrier or Apple help on the problem. Yet it's CLEARLY a problem that people as far back as 3GS seem to be having from what I'm reading. Sure wish Apple would fix this already, or atleast comment on it. It's a top topic on the forum right now.. and they must notice they are doing a lot of phone swaps for mic issues.. Get with it already!

Same here. My wife's iPhone (4S, 16G, AT & T) would say that it is connecting the call, but she could not hear a dial tone and could not hear the caller on the other end.

I was able to re-create the problem after making several calls, and pressing the speakerphone button would fix it, but it is still a pain not having a reliable phone. Trying to guess whether your call died or whether you just can't hear the caller (who can hear you perfectly) is not good, expecially for business calls!

The only insight I can add is that the problem seemed to occure much less often in the evening than at peak hours. After 9PM I was able to make it happen on about 10% of calls, but at around 5-6PM it happened on nearly every call my wife made. So perhaps network congestion also plays a part here? I'll have to keep testing, and it sounds like schedule a Genius Bar appointment...

I've had mine since release day and immediately started having this problem. I'll dial out and won't hear anything, hang up after about 10 seconds and redial. Sometimes this will happen 3 or 4 times in a row and I'll finally connect, only to the have the preson on the other end ask me why I keep hanging up on them. This happens approximately on 40% of my outgoing calls. Is this a hardware or software issue? Enough B.S. Apple snap out of it and admit there's a problem.
