iPhone 4s Car Bluetooth Audio Source Issues

I see that a lot of people are having issues pairing their new phones with Bluetooth devices. I have discovered a problem that I haven’t seen discussed anywhere yet.

I have the iPhone 4s and a 2011 GMC Sierra.

No issue with pairing the 4s with the truck.

Bluetooth works fine with Siri and outgoing calls.

When I receive an incoming call it comes across the truck’s speakers and I am able to answer. The problem is that after about 5 seconds of talk time the phone switches to the “phone” audio source and the radio comes back on. The call is not dropped and if I manually select the “Bluetooth” audio source the call jumps back to the truck’s Bluetooth system and I can finish the call with no problems.

Not a massive issue, but it is pretty annoying. Anybody else experience this? Tips or Fixes?

I'm having exactly the same issues with connecting my Iphone 4S to my 2011 VW CC. It'll connect and when I get an incoming call, it's hit or miss. It'll ring on my phone while it's connected to my car, but I can't recieve the call through my car. Today I took my phone to Apple for the second time, and the guy told me that it could be an environmental issue or there's some kind of disturbance in the areas where I drive, which is a load of you know what. I never had any bluetooth issues with my wifes Iphone 4 or my old 3gs. Then he said that it could be an issue with the new software in the 4s and 5 phones, that the car might not be compatible with the phone. He also said that the old bluetooth software, it would constantly be working, so the car would always recognize the phone, as for the new software in the 4s, when the phone sleeps, bluetooth also sleeps and the car won't recognize the phone. The biggest issue is that he said that if replacing my phone for the second time doesn't work, Apple won't do anything about it. A lot of people have complained about this issue, but Apple won't obviously help anyone in this matter. I first thought it was my system in the car and I took it to VW and they replaced the system with a new one. Obviously I'm gonna have to suck it up and deal with it or get a different phone. I'm not happy with Apple's customer service.

My problem miraculously repaired itself a few months ago after an update. I have a Lexus.

Try removing your phone and any other Bluetooth device and then go through the pairing process again. I also got a firmware update from Lexus before it started working again. That was not the solution, but may have been part of the fix, along with a subsequent iOS update

To my knowledge this problem has only affected specific batches (the early ones) of the iPhone 4S manufactured last year shortly before the launch. I understand that it is a hardware problem to do with the bluetooth chip in the phone, so it doesn't matter how much you upgrade the software, it won't help. I have upgraded to an iPhone 5 and no longer have the issue. My partner has my old iPhone 3GS and it also works fine. I have read about a number of people with this problem who have booked a genius appointment, taken their phones back to the apple store and received replacement phones which work fine. If your phone is still under warranty then I would suggest that's what you should do.

I tried that and it didn't work. I discovered that it is in fact a solution to a different problem, which is that on some bluetooth kits when they are paired and connected with the phone, they still aren't automatically selected when a there's a call. This problem is not unique to the iPhone in fact, it's an issue with the default settings of the bluetooth kit when it pairs with your phone.

The problem that I was referring to, which I think is the one you are experiencing (correct me if I'm wrong) is where the phone is paired and connected with the bluetooth kit, and sometimes (not every time, with my phone about 50% of the time) the phone gets an incoming call which appears on the screen of the phone but neither the phone or the bluetooth kit ring (although the phone may vibrate), and the bluetooth kit can't then answer the phone, so you miss the call or have to answer it with the handset. The only cure for that is a new phone. Which could be another 4S as long as it's a later one.

I have been following the past few posts. Indeed the only answer to the problem of the 4S vibrating and not ringing via the bluetooth kit is to replace the phone. No software will fix it, that is for certain, I tried every option. My old 4 works perfectly and I have now upgraded to an IPHONE 5 and that works without any issues, in fact it connects to the BMW car kit virtually instantly whilst the 4S would sometimes take a minute or more

So folks, the answer is simple, but potentially expensive. Put up with it or change to a 5, or find a 4 (but not a 4S).

Lamentable that Apple refuse to recognise the problem

I am having the same issue with my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee and my iPhone 4. I can make and receive calls fine, but I can no longer steam music. Apple Care gave me the same answer, to have the firmware updated on my Jeep. It's a 2012 - how much newer firmware can they have. This is an issue with the new update and I agree Apple should fix it.

Have a 2014 Toyota Corolla and when listening to music via bluetooth I cannot navigate thru album, artist, lists, nothing. When I try, the audio system returns a message "Failed at acquisicion of the list". So, if I choose the album and start playing on the iPhone it works ok, when go a music foward or backward on the set it´s also ok. But to change album, artist works only on the iPhone. Is there any setting to choose on the phone to fix this issue?

Same things for me .. You cannot play by album except that it will play only one album and repeat after..

The only way to fix that is to go in your iphone and go to the "Songs" tab.. Push play on any song then pause.. The iphone has to stay on the "Songs" tab.. After connect your iphone by Bluetooth with the car.. You can now play all the songs, except that you cannot play by album, because it will not be able to skip to the next album.. My iphone is a 4 on ios 5.1.1
