Mail won't quit

Since upgrading to Lion, Mail on my iMac frequently will not quit. The Quit item in File Menu is greyed rather than active black. It never seems to recover, and only Force Quit works, and that not all the time! There is no activity shown in the Activity Window.

iMac intel, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Having the same problem now. It wasn't a problem after I originally upgraded to Lion, but it has become an issue over the past week or so. I didn't notice it until I wanted to shut down, and would then be alerted that Mail was stopping the Shut Down process.

One note, before I Force Quit (since that's my only option), when I do click on the Message Viewer, all messages appear with message numbers in a sort of list default - which is not how my Mail prefs are set up.

I had this problem too on my new MBP and could not work it out. I noticed it had automatically added a mobileme account (which I do not have) above my gmail account which had the offline symbol next to it. I turned my wi-fi off, opened Mail prefs (something I could not do without it freezing with the wi-fi on) and deleted the account. It now seems to be working fine.

All I can work out is it must have been trying to connect to the mystery account before closing.

Its working ok so far and closing normally.

Not sure if this can help anyone's situation.

Thanks

Liz

Having the same problem since I went with Lion upgrade. Mail very slow to go out and sometimes won't go out at all then the messages automaticaly goes to drafts where it can't be deleted no matter what I do. Sure wished Apple would fix this problem with their mail. Very frustrated when used to having the best system in the world hang up like that.....Come on Apple, been with you for years and love the product but geeeezzz allready!

Heres what I get when I try and delete mail that wont delete and places itself in drafts:

The message “Fireplace Hearth before and after demolition.” could not be moved to the mailbox “Trash — On My Mac” An error occurred while moving messages to mailbox “Trash — On My Mac”.

Any ideas on how to get this fixed??

I have this exact same problem too and I have two stuck in the drafts now. And the only way to quit MAIL is to force quit it. Has anyone figured out to fix this?
