You can't. There is no file storage facility like iDisk in iCloud. Only iWork compatible files.
You'll have to use a service like Dropbox.
UPDATE: the latest version of GoodReader has been updated to use the iCloud sync features. You can open, store, and edit PDF files and they'll automatically sync with GoodReader on all othe devices. Documents are stored in iCloud and will also sync with any Mac that is setup to sync with iCloud. The Mac will automatically have a folder where you can open synced files or add new files from your Mac.
You say "Only iWork compatible files."
How do you explain Apple saying that you can sync .PDF's in iCloud on this Apple page?
Go to:
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2703
This page says you can use .PDF on iCloud.
It says: "You can download your iWork for iOS documents from icloud.com to your Mac or Windows computer in iWork ‘09 (Keynote, Pages, or Numbers), Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, or Excel), or in PDF format."
But when you go to the page that is linked to that one:
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2704?viewlocale=en_US
It no longer mentions .PDF as a supported format.
It appears that the .PDF situation is not only contentious here on this forum, but is also a little nebulous on the Apple side too.
The Support links you entered are correct information. Apple says you can download to your mac or pc pdf files from your iWork docs (pages, numbers, keynote, csv or txt). That's correct! You can do it! It doesn't says you can Upload to iCloud pdf files. For that you have iBooks in iTunes.
You can save PDFs to iCloud from within the normal Preview application. What is very strange, and obviously not what any of us want, is that you cannot see them by connecting to iCloud through a browser. You can see the whole set of stored PDFs when you open a new file from within Preview, or when you save a file and have the option to save it in iCloud. In fact when you start to open a file from within Preview, the box that opens and shows the two options--iCloud and "On My Mac"--can be used to drag additional PDFs onto iCloud.
This glitch will surely be fixed soon, but for now when you use a browser to get to iCloud you see iWork and calendars and so forth but not the Preview set of files.
It's now November, over two months since Matthew's last post suggesting this "glitch" will be fixed soon but still unable to see pdf files via web browser...
This is Apple BS 100%. They used to be a friendly company that made products that were designed to help their customers. Now its run by banksters who dont a S??T about the customer or the products and this has gotten worse since jobs passed away.
I paid for my mobileme/icloud - Ipad - iphone - MBA - MBP etc etc et effing cetera. Why do I have to pay any more for goodreader or iwork. Its not about the 2.99 or whatever it is its the point.
Its a sad state of affairs and I Hope that someone comes up with something to start erroding Mac market share sometime soon.
You can save PDFs to iCloud from within Preview. Oddly, you can not then access the document from a browser, or from a mobile device (no Preview...) but you can get it through the Open command from within Preview on other computers. Not a great system, but it works as far as it goes. At least it backs up your documents and makes them available from multiple locations.
Use the notes feature. Attach the pdf file to notes in mail and the pdf file will be synced within the note to icloud from where you can download it again.
Notes in Mail???
I see how you can do that but that's not intuitive whatsoever! They should have preview in the cloud and ibooks as well.
If you have a Mac, then you can save it under the PDF section of iBooks on your Mac (drag and drop) then access it through your iBooks app on your iOS device. I just discovered this method recently after searching far and wide for a solution. Works perfectly for me so far, so long as I do not need to annotate the PDF via iOS.
You are right, Ken!
But that PDF syncing happens over iTunes, and not over iCloud.
Hi, on Windows 7 pc. Latest iTunes on pc, and iBooks on iPad. Dragged and dropped the pdf I wanted to iTunes..no sync. I've read through most of these along with the iBooks reviews, and this seems to be an issue with the iBooks app. Any suggestions?
