You enable iMessage in the Settings > Messages. It will ask you to sign in with your AppleID. It will also ask you to set up the phone numbers and email addresses you wish to be linked to your iMessage account. That is how you do it.
How to register contacts with iMessage on ipad4
where is setting>messages. I can't find it in systme prefs
When you open the Settings, scroll down a little bit. It is in the 4th group of settings.
do you mean system prefeerences?
I'm sorry, I assumed you where using an iPad. What system are you on?
This worked for me. Thank you!
I also have an older iPod 4th gen. and an OSX 10.9.1 Macmini. Settings and preferences look different form my new iPhone.

Okay, this link should be helpful: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5395
When time permits, on the iPod/iPad, go to Settings, Messages, Send & Receive, scroll down to Start New Conversations From, select your apple id.
A check mark will appear next to the selection. Your “incorrect selection” will then be unchecked.
Both will work as long as you have them both checked in the above selection area, “You Can Be Reached By Message At” .
Somehow the "Start New Conversations From" box got unchecked from your Apple ID for the iPod or iPad.
This same thing happened under Settings, FaceTime. There it’s called “CALLER ID” instead of "Start New Conversations From". You need to check your “apple id” also, leaving the “incorrect selection” unchecked. Again, all in the above selection area “You Can Be Reached By Message At” should be checked.
If all this is above your pay grade, no problem, call Apple and hope you get a techie that knows.
That’s the same reason why you may not get your iPod/iPad to FaceTime. The Apple ID is very important on an apple device or it will default to the senders information which may not be recognized by your apple device.
On an iPhone check your telephone number instead of your apple id.
I hope this helps.

Go to the apple store and get text plus, problem solved
Just received a message in iMessage from someone who does not have an Apple ID(A Windows device). So how does that work if you have to have an Apple ID to use iMessage?
You can send SMS messages from any phone to an iPhone.
OK. So how do I register a non-Apple address so that I can text/message them? Right now, when I try to add them, their address shows up red and it won't send.
The only way is to get an iPhone usng the same IDand link the phone number to your device
iOS and OS X: Link your phone number and Apple ID for use with FaceTime and iMessage
and set up continuity for texting/messages
Connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac using Continuity
And over 4 years later the problem is plaguing me. My fist is shaking also. Don't they care???
