Contacts app crashes on ipad 2 with ios 5?

Hi,

I've recently bought an ipad 2 and updated to ios 5. icloud is set up, my gmail account is set up as well.

The settings are the same as the ones on my iphone 4 (ios 5, icloud, gmail account)

I noticed a few days ago that I was unable to access contacts, as well as mail, contacts and calendar setup anymore on the ipad 2 - apps or set ups crash.

I can download emails from my gmail account, yet I can't select a contact without the mail app crashing.

Everything works just fine on iphone.

Any idea what I can do to get contacts to work properly?

Many thanks

Cyril

I've managed to fix the problem a bit different as Matthias did.

I have a brand new iPad2 which I updated to iOS5, when the crash problem started with launching 'contacts' as well as trying to change 'mail, contacts, agenda' settings.

First I made a backup via iCloud (over Wifi), and turned off in 'settings>iCloud' all components (from 'mail' until 'find my iPad') and hit the red bar 'Delete account'. The view settings regarding, account ID, password, mail and wifi I wrote down to be on the safe side.

Than in 'Settings>General>Restore again>Delete all content and settings

After iPad did it's thing, I was prompted for startup settings (like language, country, location etc) including Wifi-connection. By adding my existing Apple ID-account with password, I had no problems finding back email messages. Since I had no pictures and music installed yet, there wasn't anything to restore in that department.

The apps I purchased were in the cloud, and could easily re-installed.

Sofar so good after one day...

Hi all,

Contatcs problem fixed!!!

Similar solution as Matthias 239 already described.

1a) Synchronized with iTunes (exept for contacts which was part of th eproblem).

1b) Created back up of iPad

NB: I only have my iPad for 3 or 4 weeks and did not have any contacts in it (contacts were not accessible!)

2) Restored Ipad

3) Reloaded back up.

Problem was still there.

According to Apple technician maybe the backup was corrupyed.

4) Restored iPad again

5) setup Ipad as 'new iPad'

Contacts and Setting: Mail etc are workign now.

6) Synchronized with iTunes; apps are back, mail is back etc.

Seems to be working now!

Good luck!

Same for me. Since this weekend "contact" and the "mail, contact,.." in the preferences are blocked. Also, during synchonizing via itunes I get the message that the "contacts" on my ipad 2 are in use by the ipad. That I need to terminate that... ??? Who is using the contacts?

I am no computer wizzard, so I do not understand some of the suggestions made in the thread. I do not want to erase everything and start again from scratch, as I am too happy that everything else is now installed properly. Is there no simple way for non-specialists?

I FOUND A FIX - YAHOOOO!!!!!! I have just left IPHONE ****. About 3 weeks ago my 3GS started crashing, battery drained in 2 hours, emails crashed, calendar crashed. Bought an IPAD 2 and it crashed out of all apps and screens. Bought a new Iphone 4S it crashed. Upgraded everything to IOS 5.01, wiped both IPHONE and IPAD - NO Help...

OK...my fix was EASY...ONE of my Outlook calendar Exchange Appointments was corrupted. That's it. Delete it and you are 100% OK again. To find it, put your appointments into LIST VIEW on your main computer. THEN open up a blank email...and simply try to copy and paste appointments into the email. If they transfer they are OK...when you try to do the corrupt one it will crash outlook (or it did for me). Delete and all systems returned to normal.

More detail - the offender was a recurring appointment where the organizer each week opened a 1 week instance and added files to distribute to the team. So it was getting bigger and bigger.

3 weeks of **** and $500 bucks later I am back to normal. I sure hope this helps someone out there.

I've had this problem on a new iPad with ios5. After trying all sorts I finally had to revert to a complete restore from scratch - i.e. setup as new iPad. Fortunately at least iTunes is good about keeping all your apps, music and photos to hand.

One possible point to note is that when I first setup the iPad a few days ago I had been using an Exchange 2003 email box. The emails were appearing fine in the Mail app but just could not get to Mail, Contacts, Calendars and Contacts would not appear either - like everybody else.

I was able to able to upgrade this to a 2010 one and this and another 2010 mailbox one are now configured and all seems well.

I have arranged through Express Lane support for Apple to call me at 3pm thinking I would rather not have to restore from new if there was some other trick. Does not seem like there is but think will keep that call open to see if Apple are aware of this issue and whether it might reoccur. Either seems a major bug that has been around sometime (i.e. not just an ios5 issue).

I spoke to the Apple support guy. He said he was not aware of the problem until today but interestingly I was his third case with the issue today. He said that the immediate way round it was to do as I did and do a fresh restore as a new iPad. Hopefully now though this will get some attention with their software guys and a fix produced.

I´m seeing this problem aswell.

Bought a new ipad 2 today, and right after i set it up with apples wizard, i wanted to check e-mail settings and it crashes every time i click that, the same with contacts.

I will try Matthias method once i get the time. But apple needs to adress this, its a losy user experince for me as a new buyer to have to search forums to get up and running!
