iPhone 4s continually loses connection with Carrier?

I recently upgraded to the iPhone 4s from a 3GS, and everything about the device is great - speed, screen resolution, Siri... however the phone part is not working as it should do. It loses the carrier many times per day, and only rebooting or rejecting/inserting the SIM card seems to find it again.

The phone will lose connection to the carrier, with "No service" on the top left. It sometimes spontaneously re-establishes the connection (I hear a beep and the phone vibrating) however most times I need to reboot the phone for it to find the carrier.

I decided to initialise the phone as a new device, and move over the apps that I was actually using from the set iTunes, in order the clean things up.

This is what I've tried so far:

Carrier

* I switch to manual selection, and it shows all three carriers available in my country (France).

* I force the carrier to be the one I'm subscribed to, which is accepted. The phone shows 4 bars of signal strength

SIM Card

* Ejected the SIM card (it seemed to be positioned just fine) and carefully cleaned the contacts with a dry, dust free cloth and re-inserted. The phone find the carrier and works for a while... before spontaneously disconnecting from the carrier and saying "No service"

* Tried another SIM card (A pre-paid one I was testing in the store) and it worked. Couldn't stick around for long enough to see if the phone lost the carrier with this chip too, but it seemed to behave the same as my normal SIM.

Testing other radios

* The Wifi and Bluetooth on the phone work perfectly.

Reception

* Other devices (a MiFi device that I use with my iPad) linked to the same carrier work fine in the same room as the iPhone 4s

* My previous iPhone (the 3GS) picked up the carrier reliably, albeit without a great signal strength

* My girlfriend's iPhone 4 never show this disconnection problem, nor do my colleague's

I went back to the store where I bought the phone, who said call the carrier, or go to an Apple Store. I went to an Apple Store, and the technician said he had come across a few other cases, and perhaps a restore might help. I am very doubtful of this, since the phone is new, and I've just configured the bare essentials.

So far, I'm inclined to think I'm unluckly and have a phone with issues that might have been missed by QA, but perhaps somebody has seen this and found a fix? Any tips on things I've missed before I insist on a replacement?

So let me get this straight..

All our phones were working fine until the iPhone 4S/ 5.0.x was released. Apple releases iPhone 4S and iOS 5.0.x and people are having connection issues with signal around the world. You are saying we all have faulty SIMs? I think you are out to LUNCH!

Your fix is short term. You are bound to get it as I already replaced my SIM a week ago and the issue hasn't gone away. Just on Saturday I was with a friend who was on the same network as me. I had an iPhone and he had an Android. My phone lost connection and started Searching while his phone remained the same with service! Either the iPhone 4S chips are faulty or the iOS is buggy! Apple has a lot of homework to do and the longer it takes, the more exchanges they will be doing hurting the bottom line (Profit) and customers gettting upset and switching to other platforms (Android).

I've gone to great length and put lots of hours into this matter trying to figure out what's causing this problem. And as you can see in my earlier posts I've tried everything and have had extensive contact with my operator (Tele2) in this matter.

I finally caved in and returned my iPhone 4S to Tele2 and they sent it to Apple which in return sent me a new phone a week later with iOS 5.0 installed. And TADAAHH!, Everything worx like a charm.

Note, I have the same exakt microSIM, a new phone with supposedly same hardware but iOS 5.0 instead of 5.01 and making and receiving calls and messages now works like a charm.

This is my tip, return phone and get a new one with iOS 5.0 on. This saves you a lot of time and headache.

Conclusion It's not the choice of operator and not the microSIM that's causing this problems. It's either the hardware in the first iPhone 4S that was sent out to customers (like mine), the software, or a combination there of.

Very same problem, 4S running 5.0.1 looses connection, have to turn phone off or reset network settings to reconnect. Interestingly phone worked fine in Canada on Rogers network, but here in South Africa on several networks it frquently losses connection and does not reconnect. May have not been a problem in Canada as in city and signal strength high. Have tried all the things other people suggected, to no avail. Not amused by the problem. After all, one does have a phone to make and receive calls and I have missed quite a few, compouded by fact with cell data off I have no voice mail.

I have been having a problem where my new iPhone 4S freezes for a few seconds and it loses the connection with the carrier and says searching, but the wifi connection remains active. As soon as I lock the device using the sleep button and then unlock it, it reconnects. This has happened quite a few times. Has anyone else had this problem? I am on Rogers in Canada.
