Maybe we should leave the last word on this to the Canon support team. I realize a lot of this seems to disagree with both PAHU's experience being able to use MF Toolbox & any of the experience we've been having in terms of difficulty using Image Capture.
As it turns out we're all wrong according to Canon!
They clearly state MF Toolbox is not available for Mac. Madness!

Dear *********:
Thank you for writing to us. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
The MF Toolbox software is not available for the Mac. ScanGear needs to be used instead. The ScanGear is not an application, it is a driver. You need to open an application with scanning capability in order to scan. One that is installed on the Mac by default is the Image Capture program, however many other 3rd party applications for the Mac should work fine. The following steps are how to scan, assuming that you have the USB cable directly to the Mac. If you are using an Airport or other print server connected to the printer with a USB cable, consult your documentation or contact the manufacturer for support for scanning.
1. Open Image Capture (Applications folder) or preferred application. These step may need to be adjusted slightly if using a different application.
2. When it opens, it will scan the platen. Don't worry, you can change to the feeder in a moment if needed.
3. When the preview is done, you will have all the scanner setting options on the right side, such as where you want to save it, image quality, and if you are using the platen (glass) or the feeder.
4. Make any setting changes desired.
5. a. If still using the glass, crop the desired area to be scanned, and press scan.
5. b. If using the feeder, change to the feeder, and press scan when ready.
If it does not see the scanner initially in Image Capture, click on Devices at the top of the screen, and select the 4570dn there.
Additionally, I do apologize, but Canon USA does not monitor,
confirm, endorse, or attest to the accuracy any information posted on
third party websites. It seems many customers are overwhelmed by the
barrage of information (or misinformation) being posted on unregulated,
non-Canon websites. Unfortunately, this is not something over which
Canon has any control. We are able only to confirm the performance of the
unit based on our own testing.
We hope this information is helpful to you. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your MF4570dn.
Sincerely,
James
