Can't edit photo imported from iphone 4S

After importing my photos to my PC (Windows 7) from my iPhone, I'm unable to edit them (for example, rotate, crop). I get the following error "this photo can't be saved because of a problem with the photo's file properties"

I check the properties, but they seem fine - all the right permissions, not read-only etc.

Occasionally, I will be able to edit a photo. Say 1 out of 10 of those imported. I can see no differences between these files.

I've also tried using different photo editors/viewers with no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Ok everyone, let me put your minds at ease. This issue isn't present in Windows 7 Pro or better, just tested this. If you have windows 7 home edition, you will be seeing this issue.

What is happening? Basically on Windows 7 Pro, we took a photo that was having the saving error on my buddy's windows home edition and Pro is whiping away all the orientation and additional meta-data that Iphone 4s is putting in the photo after the photo is resaved in windows.

That's not true. I have had Windows 7 Ultimate (what includes all the functionality of Win 7 Pro) from day 1 with this problem. However, when I moved to Windows 8 in January the problem was gone. Microsoft has done something in Windows 8 to solve the Apple-imposed problem that remains in ALL versions of Windows 7 (unless some update has come out for Windows 7 that I'm unware of since January).

Well I don't know what to tell you but I tried this on 3 computers all in the same room, Ultimate and Professional worked fine, but Home didn't.

Either way, when you save using windows picture viewer, you lose the orientation properties which messes it up in programs that do look for orientation. For example: picasa has a photo application that properly orients the iphone pictures automatically, much like your iphone does when you are viewing them on the phone. If you flip the picture with picture viewer, all of that gets stripped out. Some people have issues with that, the application should be smart enough to recognize orienation. Orientation didn't use to exist on the iphone until they enabled the stupid volume keys as shutter buttons.

Without having to re-read the whole thread, the easiest thing to do is make sure that whenever you take a picture or video on your iPhone, you put the iPhone's volume buttons at the bottom (facing the ground). Then everything will work fine. Also, if you upgrade/move to Windows 8 it is no longer a problem. Short of that there are numerous apps and workarounds to deal with pictures you've already taken. Just read through this discussion for endless options. It ***** but once you have a system its workable.
