Can't edit photo imported from iphone 4S

Having the exact same issue - copie the photos from camera roll to PC (running Vista), and cannot rotate pictures once transferred. I did notice that the photos that I cannot rotate appears to be the ones that I actually NEED to rotate - the upright photos I can rotate fine. Hope someone looks into this, and that this isn't a permanent data corruption issue - I have some previous photos from vacation that I really hope to keep.

Hey guys. I'm on teh phoen with apple care onthsi now. The guy wasn't awre of teh problem. So at leats now they know. I'll post a solution if i get one. Greg

I turned off photostream in iCloud settings and looks to have fixed it; i hear that when the picture gets sent via photo stream there is corrupt metadata. hope this helps

It has nothing to do with photostream. I never enabled photostream and instead download the photos through the cable, but this problem still occurs.

Greg, I guess Apple didn't provide any solution on the phone either?

Looks like Apple has a major bug on their hands.

I don't have photostream enabled, but am having the same issue.

Another thing I noticed: at first I thought this is a new issue, but I've just found out that I'm having the same issue with some older photos in my archives that were taken with my old 3GS, which was running iOS4. I suppose it could still be related to iOS5, but it definitely doesn't just affect the newly taken pictures.

I have the same problem. Just got back from vacation with a ton of photos...can could do nothing with them. Seems to be an issue with corrupt metadata in the pictures.

I used a program called 'JPEG & PNG Stripper' to remove the metadata except for the Date and Time on the pictures and all worked perfectly. The program is a drag and drop program and works quite nicely. After I dragged and dropped the pictures into the program I was able to rotate and edit pictures like I alway have been able to.

I did report this bug to Apple, so I hope the next firmware will fix it.

I have a work around and YES it is a metadata error.

Basically the metadata for orientation is causing the problem, the easiest way is to strip the data and an easy way for a single photo is as follows for default setup machines.

Default photo editor : Paint

Default images open with: Windows Photo Viewer

Right click and choose EDIT, the photo will open in paint.

Save the program with either CTRL + S or File Save.

Close paint.

Rotate picture: Right click, Rotate CW / Rotate CCW or Open picture viewer and click the appropreate arrow button.

Repeat as neccessary.

It gets quite fast once you get the hotkeys down, double click, ctrl + s, ctrl + f4, right click, rotate.

Sorry guys, this is the only way to do it fast and simple as a per file basis.

Thank you so much for your suggestion! It was very helpful to me. I just purchased the Iphone 4s and set up Photostreaming/Icloud and went to rotate the photos once on my computer, and could not. I downloaded the program you suggested and was then able to edit the photos. The whole point of having the cloud is for convenience. Sheesh. I'm going to consider contacting Apple to also let them know. The more people contact them the sooner they will attempt to resolve the issue.

yea it gets annoying and is something that needs to be addressed. Have you downloaded icloud for the computer yet so you can setup what to sync and etc?

Microsoft_Harold, thanks! I opened each file in paint and clicked the save button, and since have been able to edit and rotate pictures from my 4S. Thank you for posting a workaround that doesn't require running my photos through a stripper (although the photos might have enjoyed that.)

Apple, why is a guy named "Microsoft" having to fix your problems? I'm very dissappointed in you.

Same as everyone else, using the paint fix. I called in and the first person I spoke to wasn't very familiar with the situation and transfered me to a specialist who basically said it's my problem for not having a Mac. Very poor customer service and it didn't sound like anyone at Apple was working on a fix for it. He said someone would call me back within 3 days and no call many days later. Hmmmmm??? My first iPhone, like it but a big reason for my purchase was the camera and very disappointed with the whole situation.

Any chance you have also found a work around for the same issue with videos? ;-) Before I read your post, I installed Picasa, by Google, it seemed to remedy my picture issue. I felt safe uploading some pics and videos and saving to a scan disk. It did great with the pics, able to edit, etc. Videos seemed fine too, unfortunately, once I transferred the videos to my scan disk, permanently deleted from my computer and too many iCloud backups to retrieve off my phone, I realize videos were corrupted. So, picasa is gone. Now, I've lost very important videos and seemingly no way to upload new ones without the sideway view!!! Ugh. SO frustrating.

I checked my settings and found tehy were factory set to rotate picrures 90 degrees left when importing off teh iphone to PC. I change the settings and now they flow in upright. Hvan't tried to wokr with them after import yet thoughsince making thsi chnage.

Same problem. Tired of doing the work around (although it works). Hopefully its fixed in the next update.
