And my point, which ckuan seems to be missing, is that if a 3rd Gen iPod touch, with inferior processing power compared to an iPhone 4S is capable of completing voice commands without the internet, then the reason that Siri needs the internet to complete the same or similarly basic internal commands is not related to processing power (as was suggested by some on this forum).

I'm still interested to know why Siri does need the internet for basic functions which can obviously be completed without it (ie scheduling appointments as was suggested in the original post).

Anyone have any other answers?

I just googled "voice control apps no internet" and I found quite a few. Here are two.

I haven't used either app but they both have reasonably solid reviews. In any case, the iPhone is capable of dictation and basic functionality without internet and with reasonable results.

From what you've said though, I can see why Siri was designed to be internet only.

It looks like it ain't gonna happen but, like you said, some kind of hybrid approach would be useful! Especially with the upgrades to Siri in iOS 6; the servers are doubtlessly going to be hammered. It would be nice to have some functionality in this case. It'd also be useful in that I could make reminders on my phone when I'm in my bedroom, which btw is in a blackspot (Yay Optus 😟).

Siri requires processing power, for both the speech and natural-language recognition as well as doing some of the location lookup and processing, well in excess of what any phone can provide. Hence the need for an Internet connection, so your iPhone can connect to the servers Apple uses for doing this processing.

This is correct. Siri does a lot of processing on external servers and as such requires a connection to those servers through the Internet. Siri is a type of AI and requires some power to process your speech as well as understand what you are asking.

Of course Siri needs Internet connection. It needs to send your info to apples servers, which are the ones giving Siri the answers to tell you. Siri would not know whether you are talking crap to it, like Siri you suck a lot, etc or if you are doing something useful like setting reminders, calendar events, texting,etc. the only way it finds out is by sending your speech to apples smart servers which will then generate answers for you. Also, siri can be used for anything like searching the web etc which need an internet connection to do. So siri has to have an internet connection; it doesnt know if you are doing something offline or, in a way, online. Hope this info helps? (;

So the advertisement of the IPhone using Siri on tv is a hole of ***, we're his on a jog talking to Siri lol, I'm super impressed with the iPhone but it's a shame that only ppl who can afored Internet anywhere are the only one to fully enjoy Siri!

There must be a way were apple could improve on this.

Given that all cell carrier plans I know of for the iPhone require a data connection, the requirement for Internet connectivity for Siri seems to me to be a non-issue since there's nothing else to "afford".

And don't use foul language. It's not necessary nor appreciated.

The iPhone does not have the proccessing power to required for Natural Language Processing at this time. I think you underestimate just what that requires.

If that's the case then why can I play songs, start facetime and create genius playlists using voice control on my 3rd Gen iPod Touch with no internet, but I can't do any of the above without internet on my iPhone 4S?? There's more to this than processing power.

If you think the Siri is essentially the same as as Voice Control, then I don't think you're the one who's missed something important.

The reason is because Siri also can pull up phone numbers of local business and places - which requires access to the internet so it can search for the information.

It's not a matter of "basic" -vs- "non-basic." It's a matter of how Siri is designed and what is required to use Siri.
