iPhone 4s location wrong... Why?

My location on my 4s is completely out, it says I'm about 30 miles away from where I actually am. It does this 90% of the time! And I'm not sure what I can do to fix it. My iPad 2 and other family members iPhone 4 on the same wifi etc. doesn't have any prOblems with this.

Hello,

I am in France and I have the same problem. My iPhone 4S (with iOs 5.0.1) put me in Shanghai. First I though that the GPS hardware was the cause, so I called to Apple and, after any tests, they though the same. Then, they have changed my iPhone to a new one. I have received the new one yesterday and the problem is the same : for the iPhone, I am still in Shanghai.

So, I arrive to the same conclusion than lots of you, the problem come from the last iOs update.

I hope it will be resolved with the next update.

Apple MUST sort this out and quickly. Apart from the fact that apps such as "Around Me" and "Map My Run" are screwed, we are all in potential danger. The emergency services can use our iPhones to locate us if we are in trouble, although not with 100% accuracy, and the AA roadside emergency app, uses it to locate us when we are broken down.

It seems that most of us were fine up until a couple of weeks ago? So what happened back then?

Dear All,

I

I've same problem, I've an Iphone 4S, with the latest iOS Version, when I truned on the Automatic Location sometimes although I'm in Barcelona, SPAIN, it changed itself to Shanghai (China), changing the time set in my Iphone, in the maps, also and also in the GPS.

I DO NOT KNOW why it happens this, but I am not able to have the Automatic Location on, due to it is changing my location to Shangai everytime.

Any ideas on how to solve this???

Hello everyone.

There is NO permanent fix - there are enough temporary solutions written down here to fill Santas sleigh many times over, Apple will and cannot solve these issues without feedback from us - users who have the problem - so once you have figured your personal and temporary fix for this by reading the messages here,

the only way to get this issue fixed quick, is to go to the Apple Feedback page on their site and explain the issue, and your temporary fix for the problem.

PLEASE GO TO THE APPLE FEEDBACK PAGE AND FILE A REPORT ON THE ISSUE.

The sooner we all do this the quicker there will be a re-issue of the software and a resolution of the bug thats making us all crazy..

Happy Holidays!!

It's a global problem, mostly in Europe and Asia with thousands of people affected.

German online discussions are full of complaints, also newstickers and online magazines report about this bug.

The only solution is a fix by Apple, but they don't even left a statement that they have this major issue!

Maybe they have no solution at the moment but it would be helpful, that they at least admit to have a big problem and are trying to solve it!

But silence seems to be the greatest force of Apple ...

I have the same problem for two days now, with an iPhone 4S on iOS 5.0.1. However, the problem only occurs under certain circumstances and is reproducable by me.

  • It works fine in a city, with lots of mapped wifi networks and cellphone towers.
  • However for two days, I never get a proper fix at my place of residence. It is in a rural area with no mapped wifi and with only very few cellphone towers.

Someone suggested it might be due to the GLONASS support in the iPhone 4S. That would require that the 4S values Glonass (the Russian GPS competitor) as equal or better than GPS data. This seems unlikely to me. What might be plausible is that in light of military actions around Iran, GPS accuracy got changed, which then triggered a bug in the software. But that is rather far fatched.

Anyways, I am convinced it is a software issue, and probably engineers are working on it already.

If some Apple folk reads this: I can reproduce it in my home and I am willing to run any diagnostic you want to put on my phone.

I am also experiencing this problem.

I live in the UK, am using an iPhone 4S with iOS 5.0.0, not latest software.

The phone GPS is repeatedly telling me I am in Beijing or Sweden, but only when I am at home, or a place with poor signal quality.

It also seems to only be a problem with the 4S, not other 3GS or 4 from my experience as my Mum and Dad have these and are not experiencing any problems whatsoever

dude, we already know what's causing these problems. the lack of glonass/gps AND 3G coverage. it has nothing to do with russians, iran or war or world wide conspiracies. when you're out of gps and 3G coverage, the iphone can't use just edge to triangulate it's position. a temporary fix for this would be to turn on airplane mode, turn on wifi, turn off location for a few seconds, then turn back on location. it'll work ok for a few minutes, up to few hours... but then it'll get messed up again.

so please, all of you posting your opinions on why this is happening, please note we already know why. so instead of that, just fill the feedback form so apple can take the appropiate measures sooner.

In my case this is not true. I got the 4S two weeks ago. Since then, it traveled each day between my work and my home - and each time it logged the position like a charm: both in the city with lots of cellphone towers and mapped wifi, as well as on the countryside with no mapped wifi at all and only 3 cellphone towers in reach. Then, suddenly, two days ago it stopped working at home.

That pretty much contradicts your claims. Also regarding your aggressive posting to me earlier: yes, I *did* read through the thread. Your claim "we all know what causes it" is provably wrong. All that has been said were hypothesis. Yes, I *did* give feedback to Apple. I even called them today - the support staff was clueless, and it was ME who pointed them to this thread and another thread on a German site.

I agree with your suggestion that everybody better gives feedback direct to Apple. I do not approve of your tone and demeanor. This issue is frustrating to all of us and we are surely all rather impatient. Getting aggressive towards other uses who all mean well is not helpful.
