iPhone 4s location wrong... Why?

My location on my 4s is completely out, it says I'm about 30 miles away from where I actually am. It does this 90% of the time! And I'm not sure what I can do to fix it. My iPad 2 and other family members iPhone 4 on the same wifi etc. doesn't have any prOblems with this.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5

My daughter and I are both having this problem in the US. In the last couple of weeks we have each separately traveled from Eastern time zone to Central time zone. Our phones switched to Central time but would not change back when we returned. The phone said we were in Chicago. The only fix was we turned it completely off, turned it back on and slide the "unlock" button. It still had the wrong info after power up until we unlocked. Now it thinks I'm in New York. Wrong city but right time zone (We were not in Chicago either). GPS seems to put me at the right location on the map but address on Google maps is wrong. Apple needs to fix this. This is the 332nd complaint in this thread.

Same problem here in Brazil (or, according to my iPod: Beijing).

Strange thing... it used to work perfectly. I've been travelling around my state and it worked fine as well... When I came back home: Beijing!

I've tried all possible solutions found on the internet and here... nothing works.

When will we get an answer??

Was your router made in China? Grin.

This seems to relate to wi-fi providing incorrect location data. You might try power cycling your router. Can't hurt.

I wish I had these instructions BEFORE my trip to NYC where I was stranded without an effective map app. I have been having trouble with the map app working. After I returned from the trip I got mapquest as an alternate but it didn't work either (just thinks, never plots out the route similar to the iphone's map app issue I was seeing). I tried everything including soft/hard reboots, locations services off/on, turning off passcode lock, searching the discussion forums, trying other suggestions here, etc. I followed your instructions including the wobble and this helped my map app to respond. Not sure what the problem was but thanks for your step by step instructions!

I also have the similar problem using IPhone 4s (IOS 5.1), while on IOS 5.0.1, I am in Karachi (Pakistan) and using Home WIFI my it shows my location some where in brazil (sao paulo) and after upgrading to IOS 5.1, now it shows my location some where in Shanghai (China), I did many changes,

Changed Time zone, Turn on/off Location services and most important get the GPS Lock first and then brought my IPhone connected to my Home wifi, exptecting that this way it will update the location of my WIFI router but useless, while indoor with limited GPS reception and Home WIFI it put me in Shanghai until Actual GPS Lock.

Does anyone know if this is being or can be fixed. I have just changed from 3GS to 4s and now keep having the wrong location. Surely if the 3GS is capable of the correct location the 4s should be. I don't have 3G signal at home but then I never have. Is most annoying for apps that rely on location services. Would like a fix.

I have resolved this Issue but in a very different way, steps are given below

Turn off Location services and WIFI, After 5 minutes turn on the location services only and Open Google Maps and wait for 3-5 minutes to get the actual GPS Lock. Now Turn on the Wifi so that the Location may be communicated to the IPhone Servers, repeat this procedure with 3-4 different apple devices if you can but it is not enough.

While WIFI is turn on and Google Maps is open at the front Travel through out your locality so that it may capture 15-20 WIFI Access Points in your Area and them come back home connected to the home WIFI so that the data could be communicated to IPhone servers.

Next time the Issue will not Come.

Wow!

This thread makes a lovely read to pass time, I guess 😝.

Anyways, here are my 2 cents regarding this issue.

Recently, my wife and I moved to a new house. At the old house, 3G connectivity was awesome as the tower of our carrier was just a few hundred meters away. So while checking in Maps, whether we used Wi-Fi or 3G, the current location was absolutely bang on! Almost ridiculously accurate.

Now, it's been a month or so that we have moved to this much bigger place.

It's a few miles away from our old house, and to be honest, the carrier reception over here isn't that great.

Nevertheless, now when I am at home and the iPhone is connected to the home Wi-Fi network, it shows the location as our old house!! However, if I turn off the wi-fi and turn on 3G, location shows as the new/actual house that we are at!!

Does this have something to do with the router that I'm using? Or is it similar to the problem that has been discussed to death in the last 23 pages? I'm very confused, so some pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Steps that I have already tried to fix this :

1. Reset All Settings.

2. Turn off Wi-Fi, turn on 3G and update location.

3. Checked for Wi-Fi signals in the new locality.

4. Roamed around with 3G turned on to update the new location.

5. Updated to iOS version 5.1(9B176)

Also wanted to let you all know, that the model in question is iPhone 4(16GB), purchased November 2010.

Do let me know your thoughts on this issue people. Thanks for checking this post of mine.

Cheers! 😀

Hi all,, well I has the same issue last day with both my devices ,iPhone 4s and iPad 2 ,I reset like you said,, and now it's works fine on iPad 2, on 4s in the other hand I still have wrong location, about 30 miles in ratio out! Timeby time it will show me the correct spot,in google maps it can dance like crazy changing my position around 30 milea in ratio! This is with wi if only,, since I go outside with the same wifi for better gps signal it's showing me the exact spot immidietly ,so there is no problem with gps,, it's something like bug with wifi signal',, to be honest this all started since I bj my device !,I don't know maybe some cydia tweak caused this! But my iPad 2 job too have no problems, gps working perfect on both devices ,,don't know guys,, but outside when I receive clear gps signal google maps weather and all tweaks showing me the exact spot!

I had the exact same problem: I live in Switzerland and "Date & Time Set Automatically" would locate me in New York. All other app programs worked fine. Apple Support wanted me to do a full restore etc. Here's what solved my problem:

  1. Go to Settings -> Location Services -> System Services (at the very bottom).
  2. Turn "Setting Time Zone" to On.
  3. Turn the phone off and on again.
  4. Go to General -> Date & Time -> Set Automatically.

For me, instead of the wrong New York it would display the correct Central European Time. Case closed. Good luck y'all!

My apple phone consistently gets the location wrong even after upgrading to the latest software and trying many of the suggestions that others have made; but from the length of this thread its extraordinary that for so long this is still a problem.

Its not just a little bit wrong its about 1000kms wrong but luckily in the same country!

There is no wifi being used here, just a nice 5 bar Telstra NextG signal. No tall buildings just open country with clear skies. If I walk a few hundred metres from my house then magically the map takes itself the 1000kms from New South Wales back to Victoria. Must be one of those dead spots I was told by the expert in the Telstra shop. Yet the other phone in the house is a HTC HD7 running the Windows System and off the same radio tower; it finds the location here without fail and without any resetting, figure 8's, trawling through internet threads. It just works and surprisingly very easy to use too. I have been struggling with this since I got the Iphone and its quite dissapointing given all the hype about how good its supposed to be. No doubt this is probably not Apple's fault but they ought to know when they are so far off the mark and report an error rather than give you a ridiculous location. Perhaps I have to do more tweaking of the controls to get it right.😕

I am having sort of the same problem, when i press on a contacts address it was placing their address like 10 miles away. I found that if you remove the United States from the address it works but you have to do it in the search bar. then it will go to the Correct Address. How I fixed it on the phone is i deleted the Address from his Contacts list then wen to the actual address and addeded it to the contacts name now it shows the correct Address when his address is chosen.. Hope this helps.....
