FaceTime sound stops working while talking

Hello, This is either a driver or Facetime software issue. I have a 2011 15" MacBook Pro running latest snow leopard and it consistenly cuts off microphone a few minutes into the conversation. So we talk fine, and then a few minutes later I no longer send sound to the other person. Image is fine and I still get their audio. This is regardless of the other person's device. It could be an iPhone 4s, or another MacBook Pro. Haven't tested the iPad - I don't have one.

Also, other bugs with facetime are:

- when you call someone they don't get notified of an incoming FaceTime call (tested on multiple wifi networks, all with uPnP and QOS)

- when someone calls you, it only rings for a split second and then stops before you get to answer. The other party has called you for the past minute or so before it flashed on your screen.

- on a MacBook Pro, the microphone has noise cancelling features which ruin the conversation on a random basis. Words get chopped out. If you turn off noise cancelling it does not chop words up as much, but as soon as the person is a little farther away from the mic it no longer sends audio. As if noise cancelling stays on regardless. This does not happen on a 13" 2011 MacBook Pro with or without noise cancelling on.

- Once the sound goes off on a MacBook Pro, you have to kill FaceTime and restart it go get the sound work again.

Should I just forward this as feedback to Apple? I know the usual ... fix permissions, reinstall software, trash preferences, backup and reinstall OS... So if anyone knows what's going on outside of the alredy stated obvious fixes, please let me know.

Thanks

I have had this problem for some time.

I assume the problem is with the other end user because I have no problems in FaceTiming those on an iPhone or an iPad . . . But if the other user is on the MacBook, the audio falls away from them to me. They can hear me fine.

The persons who have had this problem are on Snow Leopard. Have not upgraded to Lion . . . Don't know if that is a problem or not.

It is frustrating to have to go to Skype to have the conversation.

I've been using my MacBook Pro with 10.6.8 for the past month and Facetime with my brother who has an iPhone 4 without problems. Before that we would connect using my iMac with 10.6.8 and Facetime, and then my sound would randomly cut off (he could not hear me). I'm leaning towards this being a system software corruption. Has anyone tried a clean install of a new system?

I can confirm most combinations of imac or ipad or iphones and OS's and iOS's where the mic problem occurs and it doesn't have anything to do with hardware or preferences. I have two friends I AIM with that now have the problem on AIM using Lion.

We don't have a clue and either does Apple which is now obvious with so many reporting the problem to tech support.

If you read the dissicussions you see most every senearo. The latest iOS for the mobil and Lion dropping on Aim.

I have had the same exact error on multiple machines. I used Facetime with Snow Leopard on a 2011 Mac Mini and a 2011 MacBook Pro to try to talk with someone using a 2011 iPod Touch. After a few minutes, they can't hear me. My network didn't make a difference (TWC at home, university system at work). After updating the MacBook at home to Lion, the problem ceased.

I have the same problem using Facetime on my iPhone 4S and iPad2 to an iMac. The iMac end can hear me, but after a while I can't hear them. But it seems like it happens after a loud sound on my end. I haven't found a way to fix it except quitting, closing the app (via double click on home button) and starting new. Very annoying. Would love to hear if someone found a solution.

This sounds a similar issue in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3388112?start=120&tstart=0.

the problem was probably on Mac side. I came across something like this a while ago. My problem was that the audio gain was set too high on the Mac side. You should try turning down the speaker volume or the microphone gain (System Preferences->Sound->Input->Input Volume). Do this on both sides of the call.
