FaceTime sound stops working while talking

Hello, This is either a driver or Facetime software issue. I have a 2011 15" MacBook Pro running latest snow leopard and it consistenly cuts off microphone a few minutes into the conversation. So we talk fine, and then a few minutes later I no longer send sound to the other person. Image is fine and I still get their audio. This is regardless of the other person's device. It could be an iPhone 4s, or another MacBook Pro. Haven't tested the iPad - I don't have one.

Also, other bugs with facetime are:

- when you call someone they don't get notified of an incoming FaceTime call (tested on multiple wifi networks, all with uPnP and QOS)

- when someone calls you, it only rings for a split second and then stops before you get to answer. The other party has called you for the past minute or so before it flashed on your screen.

- on a MacBook Pro, the microphone has noise cancelling features which ruin the conversation on a random basis. Words get chopped out. If you turn off noise cancelling it does not chop words up as much, but as soon as the person is a little farther away from the mic it no longer sends audio. As if noise cancelling stays on regardless. This does not happen on a 13" 2011 MacBook Pro with or without noise cancelling on.

- Once the sound goes off on a MacBook Pro, you have to kill FaceTime and restart it go get the sound work again.

Should I just forward this as feedback to Apple? I know the usual ... fix permissions, reinstall software, trash preferences, backup and reinstall OS... So if anyone knows what's going on outside of the alredy stated obvious fixes, please let me know.

Thanks

I stopped by an Apple store today and asked about this issue. The specialist was puzzled. He said he'd never heard of this problem. I have been experiencing this issue when I FaceTime from my iMac with my sister who is using her iPad2. At first she would lose my audio after we had been chatting for a while then, I discovered that if I try to FaceTime her after my computer had been on for a while, (even a couple hours) she couldn't hear me unless I shut my computer down and try again. I have updated my software to Lion OSX and it did nothing to fix the problem. I have not had this issue with my iPhone 4s, and on several occasions I have had to end my FaceTime chat and use my 4s over the same WiFi connection in my home (AT&T). The specialist at the Apple store suggested I bring my computer in to have the issue diagnosed which I will be doing this week.

Same here. It is driving me crazy. I have only noticed it the past couple weeks or so. Either that or it has been getting more frequent. It happens on my wife's mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro. I can't hear her after a couple minutes. If she quits FaceTime and restarts, that will fix it for a few minutes. Doesn't matter whether she's calling my iPhone 4S or my early 2011 15" MBP. She's running Snow Leopard. My MPB has Lion.

Hi All... I am also having this sound issue, running Snow Leopard on a 2010 i5 macbook pro, maxed out with 8gb RAM and 1tb HD, everything on my mac runs fine (apart from an over sensitive touch pad which seems to push all apps off screen randomly), but I use this mac professionally everyday. The sound problem is SOOOO FRUSTRATING as I use both Facetime and Skype to communicate with family and friends across Europe.

As discussed throughout this article, the usual problems arise, conversation starts fine, then the recipient cannot hear my sound, usually after 10 minutes or so, then more frequently after that, until it does not work at all (during the same session). I have run disc utililty and repared permissions (whatever that is) and also experimented with the volume. No luck.

Any suggestions most welcome.

Cheers, Rob.
