iPhone 4s: No sound keyboard, alerts, music without headphones

Anyone else out there with these same/similar issues:

  • No sound without ear buds or Bluetooth ONLY for
    • Alerts
    • Music
    • Videos
    • Keyboard Clicks
  • Lock Screen Not Locked, it changes or is blank

Brand new 4s, and there’s no sound with keyboard clicks, alerts, videos, or music without ear buds or Bluetooth headset. Ringer works, and Siri works, speaker phone works. And it does record my voice on the videos. I’ve done about six hard restarts, one restore, sprayed the plug where the ear buds plug in with canned air, and inserted and re-inserted the plug about fifty times as recommended on various threads so the phone doesn’t “think” ear buds are still plugged in.

I called Apple and they said because the ringer/speaker phone works but the alerts, music, clicks, don’t; it is most likely a software problem not hardware and they recommended a restore through iTunes.

I also took it to my local AT&T store (I bought it online through AT&T) and they were also stumped.

I did the “restore” and now my “lock” screen photo won’t stay in place even though when I check the “Wallpaper” setting’s it is still there, but does not show up when I unlock the phone unless I keep doing a hard restart.

Bottom line: Apple is saying to wait for a software upgrade in the next few weeks and if that doesn’t fix my issues I need to return the phone (which I’d rather not do) because it is guaranteed for a year…

This is my 5th iPhone (plus other 4 iPods) and NONE of the other Apple products had any issues. This is very disappointing. But I also waited about 3-6 months before purchasing them after a launch… maybe all the bugs were already resolved. So next time I will not rush to get one in the first 30 days…😟

Just had this problem where the only sound I could get would be for an incoming call, no text sounds, no email sounds, no keyboard clicks etc. I tried to figure this out for 2 days reading various forums etc. Having tried everything else, I toggled the Airplane mode indicator and sure enough all sounds working again. I was on a flight 2 days before I noticed the sounds had been turned off (2 peaceful days at that). Never occured to me to toggle the airplane mode switch.

Hey @Zynwoof I hace found out the solution to the sound bug

Materials needed:- papercutter or blade, toothbrush, dish washing liquid or window cleaner

Procedures:-

1.take the blade and insert in the place where you charge n start fiddling with is lightly

2.take a tooth brush add 1-2 drops of dish washing liquid.

3.scrub the toothbrush into the place where you charge for few minutes

4. Go to music n check if its working if not repeat steps two to three times I did it more than 3 times n it really helped me fix my sound bug. For more inquiries email me at mwalji35@gmail.com

Hi, just to warn you this is going to break your iPhone!

I am an electronic engineer and washing liquid will destroy the connector either the first time you use it or soon after....

Let alone if it causes a short on the connector and fries you phone by shorting the power connectors to any other connections.....

If you are going to use a cleaner, try contact cleaner from a reputable electronics supplier, such as maplins, RS components, Farnell / CPC, etc. A fibreglass pen and a can of compressed air.

Lightly spray a very small amount onto connector and use a fibreglass brush/pen to clean contacts....

Then use compressed air duster to blow out any fibreglass strands....

If the connector isn't clean after this then no amount of washing up liquid will help you...

I have heard people use paper clips, small blades, tiny screwdrivers, etc. all over time do a small amount of damage and will eventually cause the connector to fail.....

A fine toothbrush is good..... But you need a non conductive cleaner that will leave No residue that will damage anything....

Only advice, if you choose not to use it that is up to you, just trying to stop anyone destroying their iPhone completely...

Mine did this again and I had to do a backup and reset, suddenly I had sound again.... 5th time doing this so far....

On 2 separate iPhone 4s in the past 6 months.....

This seems to be a long term problem, as the first post about this was 2011 and it is 2014 now. Upgraded my 4s to 7.1.1 and had audio for phone calls, but no sound for music and video apps, and in fact I could not even hear my taps when I typed in my pin to unlock the screen. Music app shows a grayed out sound level bar. Sound did work if you have headphones plugged into the jack. Remove the plug and no sound. Bluetooth was the same- could hear phonecalls, but no other apps.

Try this: swipe up with two fingers from the very bottom of the screen to bring up the secret control panel (Note that this has a built in flashlight here so you don't need a flashlight app anymore!) Adjust the sound level up or down on this screen, and see if you get your sound back. This worked for me without cleaning any connectors or deleting any apps.

I just read everything on this page as I had the same issue - no sounds without headphones plugged in. I could hear voice mail messages, and talk and make calls, but no iTunes, music, videos, or anything would make sound. So, as another person suggested, I took some compressed air and aimed it in the iPhone pin connector area. Nothing came out immediately, so I also took a small piece of paper (someone suggested a post-it), and folded it then lightly swabbed in that area... pulled out a ton of dust! Then used the air again and removed more dust. Did the same in the headphone jack - but don't think that was the issue as nothing came out. With the dust gone, I tried the side volume controllers and they worked perfectly! No issues at all - works as normal now! Lots of dust in there - so likely that is what is causing a lot of your issues. It was frustrating to learn that this was the cause, but glad it wasn't a faulty phone.User uploaded file

I tried the rubbing alcohol and toothbrush suggestion. I put a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a toothbrush and scrubbed the charging port as well as the bottom speakers. Both had a good amount of dust, and are now completely gone. All the sounds work now.

This is also a good for cleaning periodically as dust accumulates on the speakers and charging port.

Remember to clean your speakers as well.
