Iphone 4s Battery life WORSE with upgrade. Anyone else seeing same?

I upgraded my new iPhone 4s today and now my battery life is so much worse. I can literally watch it drain by the minute. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Me.

I actually didn't have a problem with the battery life simply draining with 5.0.0. As long as I don't go playing crazy games for hours on end. I had switched off the timezone option in location services after reading another thread.

After 5.0.1, with no settings changed, I am now seeing the battery drain faster than before. I have switched on my diagnostics & usage now to try & add to their research.

I'm not convinced by all these back ups & restores. To me, this is plainly some software just working away in the background that needs to stop playing us all up.

Since updating to iOS 5.0.1 my battery life is getting worse.

Looks like we've still got the same issue with the "Setting Time Zone". When its switched on, the GPS indicator is still showing up, suggesting that its still using GPS services (hence draining your battery). This can be found here.

Settings - Location Services - System Services - Setting Time Zone

However, I'm positive theres more to it than that, if you switch this off it still continues to drain your battery. I've even switched every single location based service OFF and its still draining the battery, despite no GPS icon showing.

If, however you switch OFF Location Services altogether this drastically improves battery life. Additionally if you switch OFF SIRI this improves the battery life even further. This can be found here.

Settings - General - Siri

It would be nice if Apple could admit there's a problem and notify its users, its not like they don't have everyones email address!

I look forward to the next update (or do I)?!?!!!!!!!

I reply to my previous message just to let you know that things have changed for the better here. Yesterday night, my battery was as low as 3% when I plugged my iPhone to my mac. I left it plugged all night long. This morning, the first thing I have noticed unplugging it is that the usage statistics had begun woking again (I had this strange symptom: usage stats remained "dead", just a hyphen in the field). I don't know what happened, but the nightly charge has cancelled the troubles! My (working at last) statistics right now read 5h 12m Stand-By and 47m Use (phone calls, SMS, some internet, both wi-fi and 3G), and the battery indicator shows 88%. This is a better performance than I could achieve before the update. The stand-by consumption has almost entirely disappeared. So, for all those who are experiencing battery drains after installing 5.0.1, I suggest they almost completely discharge their batteries, then plug their iPhones to their computers for a full charge. It worked here, so it may be worth a try.

Update: After seeing a relatively high power drain it seems to have stabilized at a more reasonable value. After 4 hours, 9 minutes usage and 17 hours, 46 minutes standby the battery is now at 61%. Could it be that Apple has just changed the way the battery percentage is read/determined? Would be nice if some *structured* testing could be done by some of the hardware websites more objectively.

There seems to be lots of negative comments about battery probs continuing after the update. There must be more than me who are also not experiencing problems. I use my phone alot, emails, iMessage and txt, surf the web and AirPlay. Wifi always on as well as bluetooth. Most of my location services are off buy that's because I don't need them on, bar a few essentials. As I my previous post yesterday, am not seeing any great battery drain other than what is expected. Full 100% charge at 10am. Now down to 75% at 4pm. And that's after a fair bit of use. Won't need to charge until at least late evening. I have conditioned my battery by discharging it till phone switched itself off and then did two full charges. Also I have Siri Raise to Speak turned off as this can drain battery ( I don't mind pressing button for it to work ). I still feel it is not a software prob as all iPhones wud be the same considering they all use same software. Battery fault problem maybe??? Not sure what else to say as people are convinced it's software and therefore not addressing other issues that may be cause. Stronger more powerful battery maybe?

I was also experiencing high standby discharge after the update. I powered the phone completely off and then fully recharged it. My standby usage has now dropped to normal levels - in fact, no change in battery remaining after one hour of standby, where yesterday it was dropping like a rock. It's worth trying before doing a complete restore of the phone.

Good luck all.

Mine has not changed since the update and has battery life has been acceptable for a high powered smarphone. I get 14-18hrs of above average use - which is OK for me as I always have to charge my phones at night. 4S is certainly no worse than my Galaxy II.

I turned off the location settings that are all over the web and that made a big difference. Big battery killer for me? Geo Reminders - stopped using them.

I have notice like some others. Battery gor from 100% down to 20%, then it takes a long time to go completely flat. I think the calculations for the battery meter are way off.

Nov 12, 2011 12:27 PM in response to debrafrommclean

For me, its definitely not a calculation problem. I'm losing 10% an hour in standby. When I get to 20%, if anything it drains faster. I can only expect about 45 minutes fro 20% until my phone completely shuts off. At the change from 2% to 1% I get about 10 seconds before it shuts off. Another strange issue, my phone displays percentage, despite percentage being turned off...

Apple, if you are paying attention, I'll happily beta test, or run background software, or anything else you need to help fix this issue as soon as possible...

I have had my 4s for 3 weeks now and normally I would get 5 to 5 1/2 hrs use and 7 hrs standby. Since the upgrade i did last night I took my phone off the charger thismorning at 10:45 and it is now being put back on the charger because i was at 15%. Its a bunch of BS because my roommate has the same phone and his gets 8 hrs usage and like 20 hrs standby.
