I upgraded to the new software today and am still losing about 10% per hour of batter, even when i'm not using the phone!
iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1
I did the update over iTunes whith the phone connected to my PC. I did it by accident as i was trying to downgrade to iOS 4.1 but I wasn't able so I had to restore and update. I thought I would see how bad the battery is going to be but it turned out good.
Anything else you want to know?
When I first got my 4S the battery life was a vast improvement over my 3GS.
Charge it up to 100% before I go to bed and it was still at 92-95% in the morning. Over the same period my 3GS would have dropped to 88-90%.
Then, suddenly - and I mean suddenly, like one night it was OK the next it wasn't - it was only 80-82% in the morning - worse even than my 3GS.
I tried turning off a load of Location Service stuff in System Services (compass, diagnostics, etc.) but it made no difference. I tried calibrating the battery by running it until the phone turned itself off then charging to 100% about 3 times - no difference.
The u/g to 5.0.1 has not made any difference.
Whatever the cause of this it is an odd problem as some people have had issues from day one, some have never had issues, and some, like me, didn't have issues but now do.
One other thing I've noticed, is that whereas before the phone wouldn't shut itself down until the battery was at 1%, last night it shutdown at 4%
I notice that someone has christened this issue "batterygate" which seems appropriate after "attenagate" and it is yet another big embarrassment for Apple.
I wonder if this will actually turn out to be faulty batteries as it seems that turning off functions that run in the background using Location Services/GPS doesn't seem to have any major impact?

Ok I did my install over wifi.
Maybe that was the problem....
I'll plug back into itunes tonight and force an install to see what happens
Thanks for the response., I'll post back if I've any luck.
I have 2 4S phones (wife and myself). Hers does seem to have the same or better battery performance. Mine on the other hand is definately worse than it was prior to the update. I don't know if this indicates it is a hardware issue or what although I have turned more stuff off and left hers at basically default settings. I use my phone more but the decrease in battery life since the update is noticably faster than it was... I wish I had done a backup before the OTA update!
Okay, posted a while back that the battery life was worse since update but now gotta say it has got better!! I let the battery run down to zero for calibration and then charged back up to 100%. It was fully charged at 11am on Sunday morning. Have made two-three calls, some light Internet usage and checked photos, few apps I use at work and it is now on 44% (2247 Monday night). Noticed that when I'm in a house with Wifi it runs down quicker than if I'm out and about but also noticed my usage time goes up when in airplane mode!! Very strange. Anyway, else noticed better battery!!

OK tried a full reinstall from itunes.
Put phone into recovery mode which forced a download of iOS 5.0.1 which installed and then restored my contacts etc from a backup. Up and running but no improvement on the high power consumption.
I'm confused now I thought that all 3GS's were the same so why one should work and another not is confusing.
Now stuck with a tethered mobile.
Hope a fix or rollback option will be available soon.
Have a 4S due to be delivered this week and I'm beginning to regret that order
since I see that they seem to be having similar problems.
I did the same - force reset, set up as new phone... last night phone was fully charged when I went to bed. Left it on the nightstand in "standby" doing nothing at Midnight. Woke up 8 hours later to find battery around 80% and the phone died completely by 1pm. This is outrageous. AppleCare won't do anything and my phone provider won't accept the phone back as a return so until Apple do something I'm f'd.
It's not a problem or issue. The phone automatically fetch new emails every hour or so (as you set it up).So it goes under usage time.thats what costs 20 min usage. Thanks
Hi, I m trying to track down the source of the battery drain.
I Think i traced it down to the GSM Connection. Here is what i tried:
First I had every thing disabled but putting iphone 4s in flight mode. So Wi-fi was off, 3g and so on were off, even location services were off when i unplugged it at midnight with 100%... 6h later, i had a considerable. Battery drain, down to almost 70%...
Then i put it into flight mode the next night, and over night after 6h standby, it still was at 99% Charge.. So GSM off was the only difference.. And therefore i suspect one of these services to ask for GSM paging constantliy, even though i have 90% to 100% signal quality...
now this might not be helpful.. Because with flightmode its not a phone any more, but maybe this helps other guys to track down the exact source.
There is the possibility to aktivate wifi in flightmode, so i will "measure" the energy consumption by wifi only tonight... So unfortunately apple doesnt give us enough possibilities to configure these settings in detail. So its up to the developers to find out what service exactly is causing this...
Sasika,
The problem I think you'll find is that we were all generally happy with the iphone and battery life up to iOS5
The introduction of 5.0.1 has actually caused the battery loss of up to 20% per hour.
After the upgrade my 4S battery life has not improved what so ever. Still losing about 10% per hour even in standby.
Yeah I know there is a battery issue with iOS 5.My previous message was in reply of the certain person who was worried about additional 20 min or so usage while he was not using it..Hope you understood.. 🙂
Apple has contacted me on saturday, and asked me some questions of my 3GS usage, and wanted me to suply usage information. So i volunteered for a 48h monitoring.
So guys at Apple are investigating these battery problems of older hardware also. 3GS is still a best selling product..
So i think there will be somekind of fix to these problems at some point ...
here also very bad battery
iphone 4s 5 days old updated to ios 5.01 in one night already 21% less and during the day with 2 phonecalls and
1/2 hour 3g use empty
every few minutes one % going of
100% charged yesterdag 22:45hr and now 20:30 empty
this is very bad of apple
what are they going to do on it
i am mad of the qualaty of such a product of this price
I must be missing something here. I tried holding down the home button when connecting to my computer and nothing different happened from the usual. The phone went through its usual synch.
