I have upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 and still have terrible battery life

I upgraded to the new software today and am still losing about 10% per hour of batter, even when i'm not using the phone!

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1

Hi, i did my third test, and now i am sure its got something to do with GSM or at least something connected to the celluar funktion.

As mentioned previous i did another test run from midnight to 6am (6h standby only).

I tured on airPlanemode or as i mistakeably called it before flight mode. The i turned on wifi and location services, and Pretty much everything you are supposed to turn off for battery saving. After 6h it was at 99% and statistc showed 6h standby an 1h usage even though it should be 2 minutes like when i left it at midnight.

Now as soon as i turned off airplane mod in the mornig, battery droppet 4% more % within 20 minutes.

Apple, start searching at what ever the airplane mode turns off thats not possible to be turned on again afterwards...

Here is my older post with the other tests for textual continuety:

Hi, I m trying to track down the source of the battery drain.

I Think i traced it down to the GSM Connection. Here is what i tried:

First I had every thing disabled but putting iphone 4s in flight mode. So Wi-fi was off, 3g and so on were off, even location services were off when i unplugged it at midnight with 100%... 6h later, i had a considerable. Battery drain, down to almost 70%...

Then i put it into flight mode the next night, and over night after 6h standby, it still was at 99% Charge.. So GSM off was the only difference.. And therefore i suspect one of these services to ask for GSM paging constantliy, even though i have 90% to 100% signal quality...

now this might not be helpful.. Because with flightmode its not a phone any more, but maybe this helps other guys to track down the exact source.

There is the possibility to aktivate wifi in flightmode, so i will "measure" the energy consumption by wifi only tonight... So unfortunately apple doesnt give us enough possibilities to configure these settings in detail. So its up to the developers to find out what service exactly is causing this...

Make sure you hold the home button until you see the "Connecting to iTunes" screen. Before that the apple logo should be visible.Failing that you can do it how I do it.
Swtich off your iPhone, connect it to your computer and open iTunes.Next,Hold the power button(top left or topr right depending on your phone) for 3 seconds, then while holding the power button press the home button and hold both for 10 seconds. After the 10 seconds release only the power button and wait for message from iTunes. It will say you have a phone in recovery mode and that you have to restore the firmware.

Fixed! Or at least for me. It has to do with push/iCloud.

Since 5.0.1 I have carried out daily tests, exactly replicating my usage exactly - yes I have time on my hands.

I have tried restoring 'as a new phone' and just a regular restore, hard resets.

My tests have taken place in a constant temperature room and the same software run at the same time and for the same length of time.

The only thing that has improved my battery life significantly is turning iCloud push off and setting it to Fetch (1 hour intervals).

My final test (duplicated yesterday and today - to confirm) consisted of six hours use to see what battery percentage I had left.

With no iCloud push 6 hrs use and 88% left

WITH iCloud push enabled same 6 hrs use 69% left

I'll concur with your findings for the 3GS under 5.0.1

Little or no drain in airplane mode,

and when back on with wifi and bluetooth turned off it's eating the battery 10-20% per hour.

So if change my phone to an itouch I'm good 🙂

Pity I need it as a phone....

Is there no way of switching off the GSM so we can confirm that that the problem is there?

Going to add to this. I've think my iphone is running hotter that previously.

I can't be sure of this, but when I put it in the hand I keep noting that it's warm.

Anyone else with problems think this?

Right. Putting it in airplane mode, basicly turns your iphont into a ipod touch... Which doesnt make much sense since we didnt want to buy an ipod touch and need the phone... Yet in this mode i experience extrodenary good battery life..

By the way, some times my iphone 4s gets stuck in locked mode... Ist not possible to unlock it ans it gets warm... Only a reset can get it out of this glitch... (home button + lock button for 10 sec) ... During this glitch it burns down lots of energy and drains the battery as well...

Anyone else seeing this?

I got a Iphone 4 for me and my wife. My battery drained very fast from the beginning and the one from my wife was fine. I took mine back to the shop and they said it was normal. Iphone has got a battery problem. I got a new Iphone 4 again and it worked fine. I did all the updates on both the phones and they loose 1% in about 12 hours standby. Everyting is switched on, even blue tooth and wifi. With normal use the battery lasts about 9 to 10 days.

I don`t think the problem is a software problem or else everybody would have this problem. The problem is with the phone itself.

I'm sure you made a type! iPhones losing only 1% in 12 hours? Report to Apple - as you have nuclear powered iPhones. Many people are complaning of 10% loss and more overnight. 1% in 12 hours, I would keep quiet and certainly not update your software to future versions ;-)

If the problem with the phone itself .. apple has to refund us

IPhone 4 had signal isses

and currnet battery issues

in simple .. ***!!!

How many iPhones or Smartphones have you owned? All previous iPhones have had similar problems, with many issues being solved by software updates.

I have a Galaxy II and it's battery lasts a lot less than my 4S battery. Smartphones eat batteries, regardless of brand and model. Gone are the days of small screens a 5 days+ usage from a Nokia 6210 ;-)

Have an iPhone 4 that was having no battery issues with iOS 5. Upgraded to 5.0.1 and now having battery issues! Frustrating... because the way I found out is the alarm didn't go off and ended up being late for work. iPhone had died overnight.

Feeling like I can't trust the product. Gotten used to using it a certain way, and it just doesn't perform.

after upgrading to ios 5.0.1 on my iphone 4, something weird happed twice:

my phone was riniging to get it out of my bag, and i open the pocket it is in, i find the screen black, not dimmed, completly black. i press the round home button, then i saw the ringing call and was able to slide to answer.

5 days later, the phone was also rining, but this time it was not locked. i get it out od the pocket, and again the screen is black but onlufor one second, and without pressing anyting the ringing call appeared and i got the "answer" or "reject" screen.

has this happened to anyone and can i find any solution or explaination? i had teh phone for oever a year and nothing like this happed before.
