'My Number' showing the wrong number

The 'My Number' in All Contacts is wrong. It shows the SIM card's original number but I transfered my own number to this SIM from day one. I tried going into Settings/Phone/My Number but it appears that is locked and I cannot change it. Restart the phone and re-inserting the SIM card does not appear to be solving the problem. Any further thoughts?

To change "My Number" go to settings-messages-imessages turn off/on then your number will appear!

Had the same problem for my iPhone 5S on lycamobile uk as I just transferred my old number to new sim card. Switched off iMessage, facetime, log out of app store, log out of icloud and did a "reset all settings" in the settings > general > reset > reset all settings. Now my old number is showing correctly without any changes made to my apps except that I need to log back in to my apple account for imessage, facetime etc.

Like if it works for you 🙂

Hiya, Ive tried what was suggested and although my imessage works and facetime work and my actual number is also displayed on each of these, the number shown on the 'Phone' still remains as the old pre-ported number.

Its only just happened. Before this was correct but when I updated to ISO 5.1 it reverted back to the old pre-ported number.

Any more ideas?

To solve the part with wrong mynumber, it helped to change icloud and iphone info in my contact to e-mail and cell, then I changed the contact under Settings-> Contacts -> my info to some random contact and then back to mine. I had to shut down contacts in task manager between theese actions to refresh it, but you will see if you need to so that as well.

Just did what another person suggested and it worked!

I have iPhone 6s and went to settings, phone, my number, and just changed it there, click save.

Go back to Phone to check it's changed, change screen, eg. go to favourites or recent, go back to contacts and it should have changed!

Hi panagiotis83,

Found a fix! Do you know anyone with an iphone 4? If you do, ask if you can put your sim in there iphone 4 go to settings> Phone > My number (editable) > change number to the correct one.

Insert sim back in iPhone 4s. Check if my Number is correct. (This worked for me first time)

I am also on the '3' carrier (uk), and this fix worked for me, thanks! My daughter has iPhone 4 and I have 4s. We swapped sims and I managed to overwrite in settings > phone to my correct number, popped it back into my own 4s and bingo my number is displaying correctly everywhere in settings, imessages, face time, synced to itunes etc. Great if this also helps someone else to reslove the issue!

Although having the wrong number in my phone settings it is probably mostly just a small annoyance, on my daughters iPhone 4 my calls and imessages to her were displaying 2 numbers (correct num and my temp iPhone num) before the fix. So this would probably be the case for anyone in my contacts using an iPhone. Confusing hey?

So thanks again! 😀

Solved my issues. You need to do two things. Firstly under Settings> Messages> Turn off iMessage, Turn back on again and wait for reactivation which will take a few moments.

This will sort the ID issue but not the issue displaying the wrong number. For that you will need to go to your nearest 3 store or on line and ask for a new sim - they seemed to know it was an issue when I went. And transfer happened within 6 hours our so, I had no real loss of service when the number transfered from one sim to another.

Hope that helps.

Same issue here after the iOS 5.1 update. How annoying, if I lost my phone I'd like to be able to prove it's mine by showing/viewing my number.

I have tried to resolve via Carwynf's solution however I am on the 3 network and the other phone I tried to do it one was locked on O2 - this give the number on the iPhone 4 as 'unknown'. So now need to find an iPhone 4 on 3 network or unlocked. Strange that the 4 but not 4S allows you to change the number, seems to be a step backwards

Fix please Apple!

I am on 3 and also have the wrong number showing in 'My Number'. The trouble is I'm not receiving some texts now, and others are receiving texts from my number and my email address. I fixed this before by doing the 'turn iMessage on and off' fix (which doesn't work now). It started right after I updated my iPhone 4S and iPad. :(

I bought my 4s from apple and am on 3 network

Same problem here with the wrong number showing and no option to edit

With sent iMessages my email address is showing as sender ID

All this started since the iOS5.1 update

No big deal but it'd be nice to get it right :((

Well yes, by getting a blank replacement SIM card only our number will then be showing because the replacement sims' dont have a pre-assigned number on them as the new micro sim that they gave us when taking out the iphone.

So, pop into a 3 store (£5.11) or call their customer service which they probably send the replacement sim for free and problem solved.

Apparently 3's iOS configuration does not allow changing the 'My Number' field and for some strange reason it only shows the sim's pre-ported number.

I have also been having this problem. I have an AT&T iPhone 4 and was still having this problem on 5.0.1, and am STILL having this problem on 5.1. It's been unlocked by AT&T and I'm now currently in Australia trying to use it on Optus.

This must be a glitch in the operating system since SO many people are having difficulties. I even did a complete restore on my phone yesterday and set up as new. Still same issue. I know it's not my carriers problem because the silent SMS's to activate iMessage nad FaceTime ARE going out everytime I toggle them on and off since I'm getting charged $0.35 everytime I try to activate it (international text messaging fee). I have spoken with Apple Care and even their senior specialists can't even figure it out. I'm at a loss at the moment...
