Airport express not recognized by airport utility

I have been printing using the airport express for a couple of months. Suddenly the printer would not respond. I went to the airport utility and had it scan for a wireless device and it could not locate my airport express. It is plugged in and the light is steady green as always. The utlity did not suggest a firmware update.

Close AirPort Utility 6.3.

With the AirPort Express powered on, hold in the reset button on the device for 7-8 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart.

Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express.

AirPort Setup, a subset of AirPort Utility will open up automatically, analyze the network, and suggest a setup for the Express.

Follow the guided steps to get the Express set up and working.

As far as installing AirPort Utility 5.6 from Time Machine backups.....

Open Time Machine from the dock

Use the scale at the right of the screen to go back in time to point where AirPort Utility 5.6 was on your Mac

Navigate using Applications > Utilities > to locate AirPort Utility 5.6

Click on AirPort Utility 5.6 to highlight it

Click Restore

Restore the AirPort Utility 5.6 application to the desktop of the Mac

Then manually drag AirPort Utility to the Utilities folder

Close AirPort Utility 6.3.

- Done

- Once the AirPort Express rebooted, the old network was automatically connected and I did not get an option to add a new Airport Express

- I do this and get the same error message as before that this cannot be done as AirPort Utility is required by OSX. TimeMachine quits and there is no option to restore to the desktop.

Restore the AirPort Utility 5.6 application to the desktop of the Mac

Then manually drag AirPort Utility to the Utilities folder

- I would if I could, but I can't, so I won't.

Thanks😉

Well Bob,

The really weird thing is that while AirPort Utility 6.3 on my iMac still can't recognize the Express unit, my laptop will using 6.2. I have been able to reconfigure the Express so it now works again and my WiFi is back! Your options for setting up a new Network appeared on my laptop as per your example.

I will worry about the odd TM issue and the APU6.3 issue later. I have other work that needs doing now that things are up and running again.

Thaks for your assistance!

Cheers,

I have the same problem.

I am:

MacBookPro: 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 Gig RAM, 10.8.3

Airport: AirPort Extreme 802.11 a/b/g/n was purchased less than a year ago.

Working fine on Airport Utility 6.2. I see an update, I update to Airport Utility 6.3, I test, and I get:

Now, despite that, the computer is connected to the Airport.

I tried this a few times with a clones Ex-HD--great way to test things. In fact, I recovered to Airport Utility 6.2 from my clone. This is what you get:

Tried restarting the Airport Extreme and all of that . . . does not change the situation if I update to 6.3.

There is also a listed Firmware Update which does not actually have a link for download on Apple.

Looks like 6.3 is using IPv6 to talk to Time Capsules/Airports. I know I had turned off IPv6 long ago since I didn't need it. Also looks like Apple has removed 'Off' as a valid choice for that setting.

To turn IPv6 back on:

Open System Preferences->Network

Click Advanced

Change Configure IPv6 from 'Off' to 'Link-local only'

Click Ok

Click Apply

AU 6.3 should now be able to communicate with your device.

As bob mentioned in the post, the latest version of Wireless utility solves the problem , i followed exacly the steps Bob mentioned , 1) restarted my previous gen air port express , 2) and then under the wireless networks it appeared, 3) just set up after that .Also if you have the air port express connected to the router via a ethernet cable , i suggest that after you name your network and set up a password for it you will be asked at the next step to add your ISP information. Do that even even if you think it will be un nessesary (p.s Sorry for the english grammar).
