Airport express not recognized by airport utility

I have been printing using the airport express for a couple of months. Suddenly the printer would not respond. I went to the airport utility and had it scan for a wireless device and it could not locate my airport express. It is plugged in and the light is steady green as always. The utlity did not suggest a firmware update.

Airport utility 6.35

New modem - airplay working fine with old modem.

New modem - won't recognise the airport express - amber light

Plugged 0-wan into laptop

it finds the airport express

click on the airport express through the wifi on the top bar

It sets everything up beautifully, I tell it to join an existing network,

put in the password,

Everything green

BUT, on the airport utility app, it only shows my wifi, with the airport express with the old code number (not the name I've given it) and the one I've installed doesn't hang under the wifi.

If I click on the device name it tries to make it my default wifi, but then while installing gives me an error message.

I've wasted hours on this - it has never been a problem to reinstall after upgrading a modem before! What gives?
