iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now and have had much better sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Yeah mostly from modest usage. Dropped 2% while I was typing that

well, right now keep an eye on the standby and see how that holds up. this is real bug that the update is supposed to fix, imho. heavy usage like intense web site, you tube, and a lot of talk have always put some beatin on all my iPhones to some point, but never had the standby drop like this before the update and settings reset. the stanby barely move now. usage seem similar to my previous iPhones now. i would go through you complete charge a keep an eye on everything and see how it goes.

Has Apple responded yet? Or are they still hiding?

they have officially said they are still researching any remaining issues. they are not hiding and i am sure they are working extremely hard to address it all. most likely to come up with similar to the majority of my results w/o needing to reset all and recablibrate the battery, etc. i am sure they don't want to release something else that does not "more easily" address the problem for everyone that is experiencing. remember, quite few folks i have talked to have not seen any significant drain at all since upgrading to iOS 5 or getting a 4S. folks without issues are not commonly going to be on the support board... that is just the way it works.

Well, the Purchased part worked the first time I used it after the reset. Now it doesn't anymore.

when you say "Purchased part"... do you mean under the Updates section in the AppStore app? i just tried that myself and everything seems to be working as expected. is the submenu just not there or is there nothing in it?

I was referring to one of my previous posts in this thread. The rest of the Settings temporarily fixed one of my problems with the iPhone that was unrelated to the battery. Yes, I am talking about the part under the Updates of the App Store. My "All" and "Not on this iPhone" lists are identical; the "All" list only contains the same apps as the 'Not on my iPhone" list does. When I reset the Settings, I went to the App Store, and it was working correctly, the apps already on my phone were in the "All" list. The next time I went back, it reverted to its old ways.

For fixing the battery: My phone is almost drained! I'm excited to see how this works tomorrow. I'll post what happens then.

I would like to personally thank you for helping me, even if this doesn't work.

So here's an interesting development..I'm running a 4S on ATT and after resetting all settings via the phone, none of my installed applications show up under location services. The only thing in there is siri, find my iPhone and the system settings. Weird. I've already done a reboot amd still no joy. Also no option to set up as a new phone while going through the setup pages.

Like you I've been with Apple for a long time with a lot of products and this one has got me stumped.

You'll have to go in each app, and it will ask you to use Location Services.

I am also very happy to have found this thread among all the complaints on the other one! Thank you, thank you!

I did the update the day it came out. Then yesterday I did the hard reset. (I also didn't see the choice "as new iPhone" but went ahead anyway). Then I let the battery drain. I have to say that the last 1% took forever ironically enough. I recharged overnight to 100% and definitely noticed a difference today. I'm currently at 37% with 4 hrs usage and 13 hrs 21 min standby. I'm fine with charging overnight each night.

I did see the percent drop a few points when I was writing a lengthy email.

Some additional comments:

I hadn't really noticed a big battery problem initially but this is my first iPhone. But I hadn't enabled wifi syncing with iTunes originally. I was able to set up and activate without connecting to the PC. I hadn't been interested in syncing my music to my phone since I still have my Nano. Well, last week I did connect to the PC to charge which made the connection and I wonder whether that had any impact? I have not enabled since the reset.

Also, I saw someone post about Exchange accounts. I deleted my work Exchange email account before the reset and haven't yet added it back. I'm a little nervous about it. But I have turned off "push" and set "fetch" at hourly.

I also have an original iPad and this weekend for the first time it only said 96% after charging overnight. I haven't noticed a difference in its battery life though so far.

I think that's it! Thanks again!

That did it! Also I reset all settings for a second time before I actually read your responses and the second time did indeed give me the option of setting up as a new phone. Yeah, I've never been real patient and I hate reading instructions! Seriously though, My big isue has been when my phone is using 3G vice wifi. Standby drain isn't terrible although it's about half of what apple claims and wifi peformance is pretty close to spec, the problem for me has been 3G usage. It's about half of apple's specs, about 3 hours. I lose about 1 percent for every 2 minutes of any kind of usage over 3G. Hopefully this will help. Thanks for the resonse guys!
