Apple is replacing all 1st generation nanos with the latest 6th gen model. They have to, as there are no 1st gens around any more.
I'm disappointed Apple did not do a better job communicating this from the start. I liked my 1st gen, and it was a classic - the first nano ever made. Had I known, I would not have sent my in, as it worked just fine. Now I'm stuck wi this new miniature model, and I'm not a fan. If you have anything larger than a child's hands it's hard to even operate it!
I agree, I am no fan of this current generation Ipod Nano. The trend in electronics is smaller and lighter but at this point I think Apple has taken this approach a little too far. Even though the 6th generation is very advanced and has great features it is hard for many people to take a product this small seriously. Just looking at it most people will not see the value and have concerns about its quality not to mention being scared to death about losing it very easily due to its small size.
With this said, I sent mine in for what amounts to a free new Apple product for me. My 1st generation Nano had been retired for over 2 years and was just sitting in the back of a desk drawer taking up space. While mine works fine it had just been replaced many times over from a functional standpoint when I bought the 1st Ipod Touch, then the 1st Iphone, and then the 1st Ipad.
I think , for me, the best use for the current generation due to its small footprint will be in my car. That way I do not have to constantly plug and unplug my Iphone from the Aux input in my vehicle, which is locate in the center console, and can just leave the Nano in there at all times. Not to mention it will free up some space in my center console.
