1st Gen Nano Recall Notification

Finally! I got notification from Apple this evening that they will be replacing my 1st gen nano. I had to verify serial number, but other than that they said they will send me packing materials and instructions to send it back and they will send me a replacement. They didn't say what they would replace it with (refurbish 1st gen, 2nd gen, 3rd gen...). Anyone have an inkling?

I received my replacement silver 6th generation iPod Nano today, exactly six weeks to the day that Apple received my old 1st Gen! 🙂 It was fully charged and ready to load with music, etc. I worried I wouldn't like it as I thoroughly loved my 1st Gen Nano. I especially loved the lanyard earbuds on the 1st Gen. Those allowed me to wear the iPod around my neck without any long, loose cords in which to get tangled. I also felt I wouldn't like the 6th Gen's small size and touch screen.

Well, mark me happy with this new Nano. The device is TINY, no doubt about it. Hope I don't lose it! The touch screen works well for me and there are some great watch faces. I'll have to get a watch band now. 🙂 I still wish there were lanyard earbuds, but I doubt Apple will make any at this point. I think they are done with the iPod music device.

At any rate, more pluses to note: The bright, clear sound and 24 hour charge! Makes me realize how badly my 1st Gen was failing. The old Nano was down to about 2 hours of play.

All I received in the box was the Nano and a brief letter from Apple. No instructions. I had to download the PDF instructional manual from this site. Just an FYI. The device is fairly self-explanatory, though.

All considered, I'm very pleased and I think most will be as well.

Cheers!

Hi guys

It's getting close to the six week anniversary since I sent my ipod in.

Can anyone tell me if your "Repair Status" from the link I received when the ipod was received is updated once the ipod is shipped? I am checking it on an (almost) obsessional basis but if it's not going to be updated then perhaps I should just leave it?

Cheers

Your repair status will update when the replacement iPod is shipped. You will also receive an email with a tracking number. My iPod shipped on March 2, 2012 and I received it from Fed Ex on March 6, 2012. Apple is requiring a signature on delivery, so someone needs to be available to accept and sign for the package. Unless, of course, you request Fed Ex (USA) to hold your package for pick up. The email you receive on shipment will have all the details. 🙂

https://supportform.apple.com/201110/ You have to complete this form in order to begin the replacement process. You must use the packaging Apple sends you to return your iPod Nano. The online form will match up your serial number with your personal details, if you registered or directly purchased your iPod from Apple. Otherwise, you will have to input a valid serial number. I'm sure the replacement case number won't work. You will need to supply the serial number for the iPod you purchased, unless Apple has your purchase on file already.

Thanks Kimka - that was just the information I required. I am based in the UK so can't request Fed Ex hold my package. I have however given a work address so there is usually someone there to be able to sign.

You have just asked my next question re timings in your next post 🙂 and the timings are pretty similar to mine - ipod was received and "Product replacement pending" message on 3rd Feb - so 6 weeks will be Friday 16th March!

I think it can be seen from a google search and also the amount of people even on this forum who have received these to know it's not a scam - it's just really frustrating that we are without our ipods for what seems like a long time.

I'm waiting for my replacement Ipod since January 13th here in Germany. After all these years it still worked fine and I would have kept it but since my son is using it too, I thought it might be better to replace it.

I guessed apple must have a good reason for the recall.

Actually I'm not a special Apple maniac, but if I could find a reason to spend a little more money for an Apple product, I did so....

I had one of the first Imacs and Ipods and now I'm using an Ipad and a Mac-mini.

Now that I know how long it takes the apple service to exchange such a tiny little item I get a guess how long I'd have to wait if one of my other apple products was damaged.

This conviced me to never again buy anything from this company!

I think this is not a the way to treat the customers

Are you for real?

This SHOULD convince you to buy from Apple. The fact that they recalled such an old item, paid for all the shipping, and then sent back a brand new model is AMAZING! I've never experienced this with any other company.

Sure, it did take a while to get it, but that should be expected with such a huge recall. Taking back thousands and thousands of old nanos, checking them, and then sending new ones is probably lower on their priority list than if one person sent in a single laptop to get fixed. It would be naive to think this would be a fast process.

In the end, this company stood behind a product that was (for me) about 7 years old and replaced it free of charge with a brand new model. I think this IS a great way to treat customers.
