1st Gen Nano Recall Notification

Finally! I got notification from Apple this evening that they will be replacing my 1st gen nano. I had to verify serial number, but other than that they said they will send me packing materials and instructions to send it back and they will send me a replacement. They didn't say what they would replace it with (refurbish 1st gen, 2nd gen, 3rd gen...). Anyone have an inkling?

I took my ipod nano to the "genius bar" Beijing Xidan Joy City Apple Store today. The "genius" was not a genius (categorically an idiot). He asked me to sign the replacement/work order form but it didn't have my name on it. Instead it had some lady's name and the email belonged to some other lady (different first & last names). I'd asked the "genius" why I should sign the form that doesn't have the correct information on it. He said "the name and email is not important, only the phone number is necessary." I told him, in a sarcastic tone, that Apple had wasted their time training him. He smiled and looked a little embarrassed but did not correct the information on the form. Then I asked if they will replace my nano with a new one or just the battery. He said they will change the casing on the nano and with his index finger gesturing a bigger screen on the nano (not a genius move).

Since 2008, I have been visiting the Genius Bar at the Beijing Sanlitun Apple Store 6 or more times with hardware problems on my 15" mbp. Apple has been very good in replacing defective parts (basically every major part of my mbp has been replaced under warranty). However, there is a noticeable dumbing down of "genius" staff in Beijing.

The estimated shipping time for my box was about 10 days, it has gone 8 days now and today I checked the service status of my return-ipod process. it says "Step 1 | Order: An empty box has been delivered/shipped" (22 November 2011). I'm not sure what they mean, isn't it supposed to be "been sent"? Maybe they failed at the translation or something (Swedish). Because I haven't received it yet nor have I sent it. I'm guessing they sent it?

Can you recall what it stood there for you?

I sent my nano off today - the 10th day - but because I only received the box to post it back in yesterday evening, I had no time to even recharge it and do a backup. I checked the repair status and it is claimed the box was sent 6 days ago! I can't believe it takes 5 days even 2nd class but it is pretty stressful trying to fit into Apple's repair window. 10 days from the request isn't reasonable if the box doesn't arrive.

All I can say is that I am really disappointed with how Apple is handling this situation and their solution. If they are sending out refurbished 1st generation Nano's then shame on them. According to a site that covered the Nano recall it states that Apple will be replacing the 1st generation for the newest Nano model. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2062147/Apple-iPod-Nano-recall-ea rliest-model-If-new-free.html However reports from people are stating that they recieved a refurbished Nano. This is either false representation from Apple or poor reporting from Daily Mail.

I would add that the reference to charging up to $100 for diagnostics be just an oversight from Apple when emailing the customers who are involved in the recall. It is poor business to consider charging customers fee's because of their faulty product. To take it a step further $100 can pretty much get you a new one. I had purchased 3 Nano's at the same time. Two of them worked fine to date and the other one just died (probably having something to do with this recall). When I saw the fee's associated with repairs I decided to replace mine with an Itouch. Which is horrible considering I threw my broken Nano away after two years of it lying broken in a junk drawer.

The bigger question I have is how long did Apple know about this? Maybe they were hoping that of all the models out there that people either upgraded or simply threw away their broken Nano's. Seems like there was the possibility of replacing them with newer Nano's until they realized how many they might need to replace. Because let's face it that they knew by the seriel numbers that these Nano's qualified and it shouldn't take 6 weeks to replace it. Heck they recieved one of my Nano's the next day in the mail. If you buy something at a store and it breaks they don't give you a refurbished replacement. They give you a new one of that model or a new similiar product if they no longer carry the product.

The true answer to what kind of customer I am going to be with Apple will be defined when I get the replacement in the mail. If it's a new one I will applaud their company for holding true to good business practices. If I get a refurbished one (USED) then I will never purchase another Apple product again and encourage my friends and family to do the same.
