iphone 3GS - no sound without headphones

After days of looking at my 'Mute' 3gs...i've caved under the pressure and ordered a 4s. Arriving in the mail after New Year. Sigh....

I had the same problem with my 3GS 5.0.1.

I tried all the suggestions in this thread and more. nothing worked. I did manage to get my phone working again simply by going to into settings and moving the volume slider all the way down and then up again. The sound Worked straight away.

Definately a software issue in my case. It will be interesting to see if this works for other people :)

Thanks Mussdj, I tried your suggestion of turning the volume all the way up and then back down but with mixed results.

Interestingly once the volume has been adjusted in settings > sounds using the slider bar, the side volume buttons do work again, but only briefly in my case. As soon as I exit the settings app they stop working again.

I think Apple are scamming people when they refuse to fix you phone. They claim that you have dropped it in water or some other chemical. I think this is Apple's way of telling you to get lost and we don't warranty anything.

I had the same problem, turns out I think a rain drop hit the ear jack hole. I plugged the earphones in and out a couple of times and it started working again. Solved my problem

I have the same issue since last weekend but I upgraded to IOS5 some time ago with no problems.

I have 2 more things occur - the headphone jack only goes 3/4 of way into socket. Secondly my itunes does not recognise my device anymore even after doing a reinstall of itunes. The USB is fine because it still charges through my Mac.Seems a bit too much of a coincidence?

Having the same issue here with a 3GS and a 4. Alarm, ringer and message tones work fine, but can't play music through the built in speakers and all apps are mute.

Flicking silent on and off doesn't help. It does play through the original headphones, but today when I plugged it into my set go logitech speakers to listen to music (just goes through the headphones jack) I realised it wasn't working through them either.

Tried the dock in the lounge, no good, tried the speakers in the shed, no good. In fact the only way I could get any music out of it was with the original apple headphones it came with.

I am hoping it is just a bug and not the early stages of a system where they will only interact with other apple products.

I'm having the same problem but what is odd to me is that I had the no sound issue on my 3GS and when I updated to 5.0.1 the problem went away. I even recall reading in the new IOS releast that one of the issues the new IOS fixed was a sound issue with the 3Gs. Ironically I recently sent my 3Gs in for a screen repair (pixels started bleading after the phone was dropped), and after the screen was repaired and the phone returned to me the sound is agian not working. Apple has to be aware of this problem and hopefully when the next IOS comes out it will be resolved again.

I have iPhone 4 and I did have the same problem. I tried what Zapnoid suggested, pluged in and out headphone a several times, and it worked, amzaingly. It is obvious that the headphone jack of any iPhones has a problem and Apple needs to do something about it.

Even i had the same problem after updating to IOS 5.

I just want to let IPHONE 4 users how I fixed a problem that even geniuses couldnt fix.

My iphone sudenly lost sound in the speaker, the ringer didnt work, notifications didnt work and I could not hear sound when I played a video on youtube, also no sound when I played music unless I plugged in earphones or a set of small speakers.

I tried all settings and nothing, I tried solutions on the trouble shooting advice from this section and still nothing and I saw posts of users with similar problems, tried hard reset, the 5 step suggestion and nothing worked.

Then after a complete reset of the iphone and sync of all apps etc nothing worked, then tonight my 12 year old girl asks to play on my iphone and

I say no audio ig you still want to play and then an epiphony, I asked hey remember when I tell you to mute the sound and she says yes sure and I asked if she just turned it off with the side slide button and she said most of the time but also that some of her games gave her a mute option so I asked her to go to her favorite game and see if she had left the sound off, well in the sync I had not chosen that game so she couldnt find it, we downloaded the game again and she turned the mut off and incredible SOUND started working, speaker was working, we called my iphone and it rang and key sounds were working and notifications as well, so it was the mute in the game that messed it all up.

Guys, try using all your battery... It will turn off, then recharge it.

After that my sound got working again!
