iphone 3GS - no sound without headphones

I get sound through the hedphones but not throuh the speaker. the sound adjuster on the side does noting except bring up the picture of a speaker, but no usual slider bar. In one app (tuned in radio) it says at the bottom "no volume available". the normal music app contains no volume slider unless the headphones are plugged in.

This is my second 3GS - no such issues with the first one. I am on ioS 5.0.1 if that could affect it (and I wasn't before)

thanks anyone!

Hi Ciireenee,

I've been scouring the net and I can find plenty of people affected by this issue, but no fixes I'm afraid.

As I said previously the fault appears to be purely software based, as I've actually tested a different headphone jack cable.

Since it's software the only options would be to (1) downgrade your phone to iOS 4, (2) return it Apple to exchange it for a replacement phone, or (3) wait for Apple to address the problem and fix it in a future update.

Since Apple do not let users downgrade to previous versions of iOS option 1 is only possible if you have previously taken measures to backup your SHSH blobs, which I'm guessing you haven't done. Option 3 is a possibility, however at this stage I haven't found anything to indicate that Apple have even acknowledged this issue, let alone made any efforts to address it. As such as fix for the issue in a future update is unlikely. This of course leaves you with option 2.

Given that many people are affectd by this issue I wouldn't go down without a fight. Even though your warranty has expired I would pressure Apple to replace your phone on the grounds that it was rendered faulty by their software update, not through any mistreatment of the phone.

To support your argument, I would scour the various iPhone forums out there and print out all the threads you can find of people describing the same or similar sounds faults following the iOS 5 update. Once armed with this evidence I'd book a genius appointment and take your phone back.

If Apple wont budge and refuse to replace your phone, as a previous iPhone owner you are entitled to exchange your faulty iPhone (even though Apple actually broke it!) for a replacement phone at a substantially reduced cost (compared to buying a new one). The other option of course is that you retain your faulty iPhone, hold onto your money and then send Apple a message through buying an Android phone. Hopefully it wont come that though, in my experience Apple are extremely generous when it comes to keeping their customers happy.

Having the same problem buddy. Did you find a fix for it yet?

The following features are not working correctly for me since updating to iOS 5.0.1:

-no unlock sound (setting is active)
-no lock sound (setting is active)
-ringer volume cannot be increased/decreased with side volume buttons
-no sound when playing youtube clips or any other videos
-no keypad clicks

Thanks for the suggestion arish. I tried it but it didn't help I'm afraid. I've also tried performing the resets wherebt you hold down both the power and home button until the phone reboots but that didn't help.

I dont actually have any VoIP apps installed on the phone, in fact it's a clean install with no additional apps installed at all.

I tried using Viber call. The program asked me to choose sound source.. either iphone or docking system (***?). Worked fine as i could put the call on Speaker phone and all. Other apps said i'm on Mute. I've been through all the Settings again and again. I can't find mute or system sound options anywhere. Other sites have asked me to do a factory setting, which i did but still nothing. I don't dare to pull apart my phone coz my warranty is over. Is my only option now to get a new iphone???

Earlier on I also found this "solution" and tried it - until I realized how stupid it was. This way you will quickly destroy your earphone socket and the bug in 5.0.1 soon will disable the sound again.

The bug is so obvious and Apple reaction absence... maybe is on purpose? So you guys will destroy your sockets and need to go to shop to repair it... and it would be of course your fault as you would intentionally destroy the socket...

Having the same issue here with a 3GS and a 4. Alarm, ringer and message tones work fine, but can't play music through the built in speakers and all apps are mute.

Flicking silent on and off doesn't help. It does play through the original headphones, but today when I plugged it into my set go logitech speakers to listen to music (just goes through the headphones jack) I realised it wasn't working through them either.

Tried the dock in the lounge, no good, tried the speakers in the shed, no good. In fact the only way I could get any music out of it was with the original apple headphones it came with.

I am hoping it is just a bug and not the early stages of a system where they will only interact with other apple products.

I'm having the same problem but what is odd to me is that I had the no sound issue on my 3GS and when I updated to 5.0.1 the problem went away. I even recall reading in the new IOS releast that one of the issues the new IOS fixed was a sound issue with the 3Gs. Ironically I recently sent my 3Gs in for a screen repair (pixels started bleading after the phone was dropped), and after the screen was repaired and the phone returned to me the sound is agian not working. Apple has to be aware of this problem and hopefully when the next IOS comes out it will be resolved again.

I recently went to the Apple store and was told this was an issue with my phone and not the IOS 6 upgrade....I would greatly appreciate a better explanation form the support staff as to why it is happening on all of the 3Gs models after they are upgraded to IOS 6??? Sounds more like a software problem to me after reading comments here on your suport board. I would appreciate Apple fixing my phone since they have rendered it defective with their update. The sooner the better...Samsung is sounding llike the real winner here....Jay

Hi,

I have this too with a 3, it plays music through headphones only, but also plays some sounds through the speaker - when I alter the volume using the slider in settings, it plays the ringtone, and it does play a phone call through the speaker when told to. It says 'headphones' in the volume box when I use the side button so it seems to think they're plugged in when they're not. I've tried all the above except for jailbreaking which I don't want to do.

Anyone have any further thoughts? Much obliged if so!
