The update is NOT available via iTunes.
If u have 5.0.1 already... it only checks die IOS number, not the build number

It is only a "small" update.... so not available via itunes and for 4S-Users ONLY!

You can download the ios-software here: http://t.co/2WJRQmN

when u have stored it to your computer.
Connect the iphone to it, make a backup, and so one... just to be sure u have everything u need.

then... Shift + check for updates (sry i dont know what exactly is written in iTunes in English -> have the german version)
Just the Shift + the button which checks if a later version is available.

A browser will popup, just select the downloaded iOS version -> and that's it. The update process should start.

Hope i could help u 🙂

What up guyz,

Yesterday, after reading looots of comments and advices, I restored my whole system,

Reset the settings, put all my data back up on device, configured as a new phone,

since then, notifications off, location services on but all apps off including siri,

emails as push manually, I used all day on 3g mode, just so you know now it´s 4:50 pm

in Brazil, and I still have 35% of battery, it definately got better ( of course i didn´t not expect

to have all these problems and go through all these different methods to have a little

bit more of battery life).

I didn´t wait intil battery was 0% yesterday so I could recharge to 100% but I´ve seen improvement.

I recommend you guys to try the same until apple becomes real mobile company and updates the current

system.

At least, after one day of restoring the whole system, I didn´t even need to recharge it yet!

I've got an iPhone 4S (old one was 3GS) and have noticed how quickly the battery drops.

In my job I deal a lot with statistics so I propose that peple post some data to get an idea of the drop

i.e. (%charge left, time since full charge) especially for stand by.

e.g.

90-80% - 2h standby

or 57-37% 1h talking

or browsing or mixed.

I did notice a big diffeeence using the speaker. they are very good (compared to 3GS) but when I used head phones I did notice an unexpected improvement in battert life.

looking forward to your data and hope Apple does not block it.

SOLVED

Solved for my case (caused by WhatsApp notification), this will suggest because of the bug in the WhatsApp or in the Notifications Center itself.. Might also affect other Messenger apps:

Go to Settings > Notifications > WhatsApp :

- Notfication Center : Off

- Alert Style: None

- Badge App Icon: On

- Sounds: Off

- View in Lock Screen: Off

If I turn On the "View in Lock Screen" setting, my battery will drain very fast if I keep the UNREAD mesage in the screen for long time.

Here are my thoughts on this. I have got an iPhone 4S and an iPod touch 4. Ever since iOS5, the iPod has been suffering from major battery problems. When I got my iPhone, the battery was ok, but not good. So, I tried a few fixes to be sure, but I think the main problem, is iCloud when its first set up. This was for iPhone 4, but it appears that the fix worked for both my iPhone and iPod. When it says "MobileMe" it means iCloud for iOS5.

(Thanks to Skeuomorph)

Do this on WiFi so you can sync and check mail fast.

1. Delete all mail accounts.

2. If MobileMe user, delete MobileMe account, and remove all Calendars, Contacts, Notes, etc., from the phone (so you don't have dupes when you re-sync). *When it says "Keep on iPhone" or "Delete from iPhone" press delete. Everything is backed up anyway so there is no problem restoring it*

3. Turn off phone, and back on again.

4. If MobileMe user, add MobileMe account first. I enabled all options, even Find My iPhone (Thursday and Friday I had it off, in case it was using power). Wait long enough for contacts and calendars to sync, check to make sure. I use MobileMe mail on Push. *Turn on all that you use*

5. Add back each additional mail account. I have 5. I am in a marginal coverage area, so I set these accounts on Fetch Hourly. I also have "Preview 5 Lines" (I think the default is Preview 2 Lines. This doesn't matter.)

6. Go into Mail, go to the MobileMe Inbox, and scroll your way down letting the messages come in. You can see them come in when you see the Preview Lines update, and then scroll some more.

7. Go into each additional mail account's Inbox, scroll your way down, letting the messages come in.

8. Go to the combined Inbox if you use that, make sure all the messages are in.

9. The WiFi activity spinner may remain spinning even after Mail says it is done Checking Mail. This is because other parts of mail accounts are being synced for the first time. Let the iPhone sit in Mail combined inbox until the spinner stops. Quit Mail, go back in, and watch the spinner after it's done Checking Mail. If the spinner doesn't stop after < 5 seconds or so, let Mail sit again. Once it's caught up, going into mail will Check Mail, and the spinner will stop a few seconds after as it should.

10. You're done.

I hope this helps some people. For good measure I also done basically what ericccs has done with WhatsApp. This applies to all apps. Only switch the "View in Lock Screen" option to On if you really really need them. Because what it does, is it keeps contacting the app to see if it needs to turn on the screen for a notification. Hence this wastes battery when on multiple apps.

I'm aborad on holiday so don't use my phone network.

based on your two sets of data your Iphone conumes 9% of battery charge per hour (%bc/h).

Mine, and I have to emphasise has been mostly idle, is 1.7 %bc/h.

I did use brieflly face time and the batery consumption was 6%bc/h which is not too far from your 9%bc/h.

From my time back in the UK I did notice that my charge dropped from 100 --> 80% in about 1-2h, but then it slowed down.

Will be colecting more data as time goes by and, as long as apple tolerates me will post the sutff online.

Good luck...

Hi Yannis_wbl,

Did you use any messenger application? Can you list it here?

Cause lat week I tried to turn off the notification for my WhatsApp and it now give me 2 days battery life (from previously 10 hours). I still try to find out how to make the battery last for 4 days (based on the ads.. -_-').

I suspect the Notification module still running in the background and consume lots of battery when it can't get update from some Apps that listed there (note: my operator got lot's of Blank Spot 😟). My phone usualy got overheat even when I already kill all background apps.. But since I turn off the notification for WhatsApp the it never overheated again.. 😀

Dec 29, 2011 6:29 AM in response to ericccs

ericccs,

Didn't use any messenger application (apartfrom the off Facebook short chat).

Anyhow here’s a comparison of my and timdebuyser 4S batterycomparison.

When I use my iPhone for Wi-Fi videostreaming out discharge rates are the practically the same.

My 4S based on 60% of the battery charge(100-->40%) get an extrapolated expected Wi-Fi video streaming battery lifeof 7.6h. Now for internet browsing (I was steaming videos the whole time)via Wi-Fi Apple says up to 9h.

Sorry about the battery type-o below...

Note:

Screen brightness ~85-90%

Half the videos with earphones & halfwith speakers in full volume

No mobile signal at all

Hope this is useful,

Yannis

After searching at website. It works for me about battery issue.

1. Go to Settiings / General / Siri / turn off Raise to speak and then reboot.

(A sensor upper the earphone is continuing on even if you turn it off, YOU MUST REBOOT YOUR IPHONE.)

I think that it is the major problem about battery drain.

2. Go to Settings / Location Services / System Services / Turn off Setting Time Zone

3. Go to Settings / Notifications / Turn off Calendar or move to Not in Notification Center

(this may be not need but I don't use this function, so I turn it off.)

After a fully charge, Usage 1 hour and Standby 3 Hours, 14 Minutes, Battery less 8% only. Now is 92%

My idea, try to reset all settings first, I like a clean reset all settings and then do 1,2,3.

Jan 14, 2012 3:00 PM in response to mkokkinouboege

Do not erase all content and settings, it will erase all your data and apps and restore to factory condition.

You don't need to recharge now, just do it and keep going to use your 4S.

Just click reset all settings first, and then do 1.2.3

Try it first, see any difference.

Mine is Usage 2 hours, 37 mins and Standy 8 hours, 22 mins and still has 73% remain.

If you don't need the old contact list and photo, you can restore your iphone 4s to 5.0.1 by itunes or erase all content and settings.

Actually, you can back up your contact list info to your yahoo email by itunes, and copy your photo via other software.

I didn't restore my old backup to this 4s, I back up my contact list to yahoo email account by itunes, and keep going using.
