iPad 2 battery drain after iOS 5.0.1 update!!!

iPad 2 battery is draining way too fast after the 5.0.1 update - I've lost over 10% just browsing the apple site over wifi for about 10 minutes - with no other apps running. NOT ACCEPTABLE APPLE!!!

Same issue with my iPhone 4 that went from 62% when I went to bed last night to completely dead this morning - unused!!

Apple - roll 5.0 back out to replace this battery leech. I need to be able to actually USE my products.

I can't even express how furious I am with these bloody updates. Does anyone in Apple development team ever test these updates - or are all clients who pay a lot of money for all those devices a guinea pigs saving Apple money on testing?

Yesterday my new iPad 2 has arrived - I plugged it in - loaded some material, set up email etc. and iTunes told me that there is a newer version of the system - so I clicked to update.

After I've updated I can't start any of the installed application (apart from the ones that come with iPad).

Affected applications include: BBC iPlayer, Skype, Facebook, FileApp.

When I click on the icon - all I get is a flash and back to the main screen - applications simply wont' start.

I had problems year ago with Apple TV - same situation - when I've upgraded to the latest version of iTunes - I could no longer sync videos with Apple TV - even thou I'm using iMac - isn't that suppose to work seamlessly?

They do nice promotional videos - but if they put half of that effort into actual software testing - that would certainly save a lot of nerves for all of us.

As already said - we can't really be expected to reset devices every few minutes because they screw things up - I'm really angry as I don't have much time to be wasted on setting things up over and over again!

I held out updating my iPad2 3G from iOS5 to 5.0.1 'till last night. I was not having any battery issues. In fact my battery was running for 2-3 days of use draining maybe 1% per day in standby, not even on the charger. However, I noticed the location services icon had become a persistant feature since upgrading to iOS5. So, I disabled every location service (so I thought) and still had the icon. (It turns out that I missed the time zone location setting and that was the culprit...) I figured it was a bug and performed the iOS5 to 5.0.1 update thinking that I would get even better battery life if location services was working normally. My battery trouble began with this update to 5.0.1.

Now, today, I noticed that after charging the iPad2 overnight, the battery was only at 98%. Worse, using the iPad2 to play Words With Friends and tap out a few emails, the battery is at 56% after a couple of hours.

There is nothing that changed except the OS since yesterday. Please don't suggest turning settings off or deleting apps. I'm not about to start disabling features and options that had no adverse effects yesterday just so I can overcome whatever Apple screwed up in the update.

I'm here to express my frustration to Apple's engineers and to warn other users not to update to iOS 5.0.1 if their iPad2 is working fine with iOS5.

Sebastion. If the apple apps work, and none of the others do, go to the app store, and find some free app, download it and use it. That seems to reset something in the process, and several others have foundnthat it cures your problem.

Rm curtis. Question. Are you using the cloud for contacts and calender? If so, turn them off to see ifnthat is the issue with battery drain. I have seen some reports of 'unreconciable' contact info that locks a pad into a circular discussion with i cloud trying to sync conflicting contact info. This runs the radio almost non stop. If the drain stops with the cloud turned off, at least you have a starting position.

pjl- No, I'm not using iCloud. And, I don't plan on spending hours troubleshooting this.

Thanks, though.

I admire everyone here offering workarounds and possible fixes, but in the end there are hundreds of variables and Apple's engineers get paid lots (and lots) of money to work this stuff out. It's part of the reason that Apple products hold a premium place in the technology market. I expect them to restore our devices to their fully functioning state without my help.

I agree completely with RMCurtis. I expect Apple to FIX this w/o me having to jump through 80 hoops and hours of restting to get my battery to work properly.

I used to charge my ipad 2 every 3-4 days. Now I have to recharge it everyday and I only use it to read between and hour and 3 hours at night. All my pushes are off and wifi is on. Battery drains up to 10% an hour with the smart lid CLOSED!!!

*** is this? Seems like I now have a nice Samsung tablet

davidch, thanks very much -- the reset worked completely, and my battery drain woes are through.

your very welcome... my process seems to work for most people with the standby drain issue with the iOS 5.0.1 update. typically reducing the standby drain from 2-4% or more an hour to 0.5% or less an hr. again, i am glad it worked for you. enjoy your phone 🙂

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery issues after updating to iOS 5.0.1 or 5.1:

1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases. It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple. Good Luck!

I was having the same issue. I went through settings turning off all the notifications and location settings...none of that worked. I still kept watching the battery drain away. I had to have my charger with me all the time. Ironically I left it at work and so my iPad completely drained overnight. Since I got it back and fully charged my iPad I have not had any battery problems! I wish I had done this earlier! Good luck
