If they truly have more Ipod nano to be replaced than any refurbished ipod in the warehouse, it is a whole lot cheaper to send out whatever Ipod nano in their warehouse (ie. 6th gen).

I bet the manufacturing cost of the new Ipod is very much lower than the cost of the replacement battery (if they can find them), the labor cost of opening the Ipod and swap out the battery, wiping the device memory clean and testing it. Selling the new one at $129, I guess the hardware cost is in the range of $30. The rest are marketing, overhead and their huge profit.

I'm sending mine in tomorrow with the bubble envelope they sent me (not a box anymore). Let's see how long I'll have to wait to get it back.

I have had my product replacement pending since November 12th. I applied for the box, the night I receieved the e-mail, got the box a few days later and shipped it two days after that. I just got an e-mail tonight that my replacement is being shipped to me. I checked the serial and it is indeed a 8gb or 16gb new 6th gen ipod nano. I am super happy since I have had plans on buying one anyway to use as a watch, etc. So to all those skeptics about what would be replaced. It has been confirmed they are 6th gens.

It looks like we are going to get the 6th generation nanos. There was a post in this thread http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1294188 where there is an image of the replacement iPods.

While I am happy that my used $40 iPod nano (which I used for 2 years) will be replaced with a newer, more expensive product, I'm not a huge fan of the 6th generation nano and I'll probably sell mine and get the 5th gen instead. 😝

I'm holding my excitement back until I see firsthand accounts and pics of the replacements. It's entirely possible that the slow pace of the program is due to estimating and contracting a special, one-time run of the original design, BUT with new serial numbers that fit in with Apple's new SN scheme.

All that said, I'm hoping to get current model replacements for both of the 2 gig Nanos we sent in. Just not overly optimistic, but that's my nature.

An one-time run of the original design scenario will be difficult to execute, as they need to secure all the components needed and many of them already ceased production (display, some custom chips, 1G - 4G flash memory chips, the click wheel, etc.) and then they run the risk of ordering too many or not enough.

There is still a scenario they ordered a one time buy of the battery, and then contract out the refurbishment as the return units are coming back. It would play out as follow:

- initial batch of replacement filled by 1st Gen Ipod already in the warehouse

- after that runs out - start sending 6th gen Ipod, in the mean time, the returned Ipods are sent to the contractor to replace the battery

- when the contractor start sending refurbished units back, Apple will start sending them out as replacement.

This scenario may continue until the stock of the replacement battery runs out. It appears Apple has underestimated the number of 1st Gen Ipod still out there (working or not) so the replacement battery may run out. In that case, they will have to send out the 6th Ipod again.

In anycase, I wouldn't worry about the impact on Apple's bottom line. Some of the cost will be recovered from the battery supplier and no matter what it is a drop in a very big bucket.
