I am Importing through a Datavideo box but cannot get the aspect ratio correct No matter how I set the project I get a 4:3 aspect rather than 16:9.
I don't have the problem in IMovie HD. When I open new project inImovie it asks for standard or widescreen and mports correctly.

Select the clips. Go to the inspector's video tab to spatial conform. Set it to fill.
No, that's right. The material is anamorphically squeezed into the 4:3 frame. If FCP doesn't recognize it as anamorphic it's like placing a 4:3 image in a 16:9 frame. It'll be pillarboxed.
A camera's not going to help you. Your media is Hi8, which is analog. It has to go through a converter of some sort.

My solution then is to import all of the media (16 hours worth) edit out what I'm not going to use and then transform before "Sharing"
Would that be correct?
I would just edit as best I could withe the squeezed media and then copy and paste effects near the end or as I go before I get to applying effects or color correcting.
