I am Importing through a Datavideo box but cannot get the aspect ratio correct No matter how I set the project I get a 4:3 aspect rather than 16:9.
I don't have the problem in IMovie HD. When I open new project inImovie it asks for standard or widescreen and mports correctly.

The aspect ratio is not working correctly. It should read an anamorphic flag from the media and set it correctly when you chnage it to fill, but it's either not getting it or not interpreting it correctly. Probably the only thing you can do is edit the clip into an anamorphic project, then using transform, Shift-drag a corner to pull out the aspect ratio to 16:9. You can then copy and paste effects to other clips as you edit them into the Timeline. There is unfortunately no way to automatically force the aspect ratio to change.
So these Anamorphic flags are part of the original signal? I take it that they can't be added manually.
If this works like some of the audio transfers I have done, the metadata is ignored by the convertor.
I have been unable to actually create an anamorphic timeline view. Only in project library. As soon as I open a project in the timeline the anamorphic designation disappears.
I tried the transformation and it worked just fine. I didn't even bother with the anamorphic designation.
Seems like a real pain for something that should have a batch process or an import process.
I'm going to have to get my hands on a camera and see if it will transfer correctly.
A camera's not going to help you. Your media is Hi8, which is analog. It has to go through a converter of some sort.

My solution then is to import all of the media (16 hours worth) edit out what I'm not going to use and then transform before "Sharing"
Would that be correct?
I would just edit as best I could withe the squeezed media and then copy and paste effects near the end or as I go before I get to applying effects or color correcting.
