Itunes 10.5.1 Completly not working in Win7 (64bit)

This has been a total disaster update for me. I am running Win7 (64bit) with all my windows updates current. I went ahead and updated Itunes to 10.5.1.

That was a severe mistake. Itunes crashes every time I start the program. I notice that genius is running right at the start up and I manage to shut it off but it still crashes.

So far I have done the following:

Started Itunes in safe mode----Crashes

Done a complete clean install and reinstall---Crashes

Downgraded to 10.5 clean install---Crashes

Upgraded back up to 10.5.1 started back in safe mode--Crashes.

I have stopped my anti-virus during all installs and starts and it still crashes.

My system is clean of viruses.

No error messages are provided for all the crashes other than "This program has stopped working"

My frustration is awful. I really hope they get this fixed or someone can offer a solution. I am so sorry I ran that upgrade.

I'm having the same experience. Within 10-60 seconds of starting up, I get the message "iTunes has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will cloes the program and notify you if a solution is available." This is also a Win7 x64 clean system. Worked great until this last upgrade.

Error logs for all the crashes look the same, referencing MSVCR80.dll and code 0xc0000005.

This started happening before I upgraded to 10.5.1. I'd made no changes to my computer in the last month but all of a sudden iTunes is crashing in the last few days. Upgrading to 10.5.1 did not help. I performed several different system restores on my computer, going as far back as 2 months, and attempted 10.5 and 10.5.1 at each point. Before each installation of iTunes, at each restore point, I uninstalled all Apple software, cleaned the registry, and rebooted. Same error every time. iTunes crashes ("iTunes has stopped working") within 60 sec of opening and leaves no useable details in event viewer. I don't think this is a Windows problem. Maybe the initial handshakes between iTunes and Apple servers are causing this. I hope more people are experiencing the same issues and Apple is forced to look into it.

I'm having exactly the same problem on two different machines. HOWEVER, I think it MUST be on Apple's end. One machine I downloaded and updated as iTunes suggested. After spending a few hours trying to figure out why it was crashing, I launched iTunes on my second computer but did NOT update.

They are both crashing after about 30-60 seconds.

One is Win7 64bit, 8gb ram, nice machine- yada yada yada

The second machine is Vista 6gb ram, decent machine and literally all it does it run a powerpoint presentation and itunes. period.

Just an update, I've done several clean install and reinstall. So far now Itunes is limping along. While I can get the Itunes to come up, if I try any of the following it immediately stops working:

Clicking on the Itunes store---Crash

Trying to Look at Itunes account---Crash

I can update my apps, but the Itunes store and Account is dead in the water. I'm sick with frustration, I did check and see if Itunes worked with a different profile and low and behold if I use the guest profile.......stupid Itunes works. What I find frustrating, is that before installing 10.5.1 Itunes was working correctly!! I had no problems and I had not performed any major system updates. Anti-virus is current & Windows is current. I even went ahead and did a full uninstall of AVG anti-virus, installed Itunes before AVG and still it crashes if I start the Itunes Store.

Also I went ahead and turned off Genius (crashing with that too) and I turned off Home Sharing.

The thought of having to do a full system tear down just to get Itunes working makes me want to scream. No doing the System restore did nothing as well. While Apple & Microsoft point fingers at each other I am left with malfunctioning software after their update, and a system tear down.

If anyone can resolve this I would appreciate anything pointing me in the right direction.

After a day 1/2 of frustration and tears I got Itunes 10.5.1 working properly on my Win 7 64bit Home Edition.

I concluded that the profile, lets call it blue99 was in some way corrupted. The reason is that I followed the troubleshooting steps outlined here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1717

Under the heading of Create a New User Account

I went ahead and created a new profile, lets call it B99. Under this new profile, I started up Itunes and sure enough it fired right up, Itunes store came up etc with no crashes. The strange part is that when it started up, the Itunes user agreement came up. In the other profile where Itunes would crash, after I would re-install, I NEVER GOT THE USER AGREEMENT. It would just go through an install, and when it would restart, it would immediately start to crash.

So now I concluded in agreement with the suport article that it was a "user-specific problem"

With this info, I took a gamble. I did not follow the "User specific Troubleshooting" offered in the article.

Instead I followed the directions found here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/fix-a-corrupted-user-profile

I followed these very carefully. I copied all of my files found under C:\users\Old_Username folder, in this case that would have been the profile blue99. From there I copied the folders in there to the C:\users\New_Username folder in this case B99. The most important rule of thumb is MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FULL ADMINSTRATIVE PERMISSIONS BEFORE YOU START.

I then right clicked on the B99 folder and went to Properties and under the Security tab I gave the profile B99 full permissions. After this I went back to Control Panel and under User accounts I went and turned the B99 profile into full administrator and took the corrupted profile blue99 and switched it too Standard adminstration.

I restarted my computer and logged in under B99, started up Itunes and Yay!! Itunes is up and running. No crashes so far!! When I was running Itunes on the old profile I went ahead and turned off Genius and Home sharing. In this new profile I turned on Genius and it worked with no crashes. But I don't want to push my luck so I turned it off. Itunes has been running with no crashes. This is what worked for me, yeah its convuluted but I was desperate!! I don't even consider this a patch, so much as I cheated to get Itunes running.

If someone has a simpler way to get Itunes 10.5.01 to run, please let me know!!

Please note when I started this I had already reinstalled Itunes on the corrupted profile. I did not install Itunes again on the new profile. I just started it up.

I posted this earlier, but just in case....

I have two computers, one is Win7 64bit Home Premium on which iTunes was updated to 10.5.1.

The other computer is vista 32bit Home Premium on which I did NOT update iTunes.

Both crash after approx. 30 seconds.

Oddly, as of yesterday, when launching iTunes, the iTunes store is chosen by default upon initial launch. I see the progress bar hiccup while loading.

Yesterday evening, another interesting discovery on the Vista machine - iTunes wouldn't shut down. A song was playing. I clicked the stop button and music stopped. But File Exit and the X are both innefective. I couldn't even use Task Manager to kill iTunes.

I don't think rebuilding my user profile is a viable solution - particularly since not both machines were updated.

Clearly, this points to the connectivity with the iTunes store and not Windows (either version).

I sure hope Apple gets this fixed because right now, iTunes is completely useless.

I've tried everything from running as administrator to cleaning out my registry and performing a clean install and I still have this problem. Interestingly, one machine is a Windows 7 64-bit system and the other is an XP. Same issue. I've had this issue similarly in previous builds of iTunes; it seemed that it took several updates to the program to get to one that was alright. I'm just being patient, hoping Apple solves the issue. One thing I'm having trouble with is editing file info within a song or video. Can't do it without a crash. Seen it before. Patience eventually won out and a solution came with an iTunes update.

Just completely uninstalled all Apple software. Reinstalled. Still no joy. iTunes crashes within 30 seconds of launch. This is BS. It is not reasonable to remove/rebuild my user profile. For those of us with a lot of application software, this is not only time consuming, but ultimately nonproductive.

Apples needs to get this fixed. I hope they are monitoring these boards.😠

Same problem here and an additional tidbit. I have another computer running Vista Home Premium 32bit. Did NOT update iTunes and have the exact same problem with one additional one... I can't close iTunes on that computer. The File|Exit menu command doesn't work; the X doesn't work. In fact, iTunes monopolizes the screen and even Task Manager won't come to the front so I can kill the iTunes there.

This is a cluster.

UPDATE: I'm not more convinced than ever that the problem is on Apple's end - not my computers'.

I just used Revo Uninstaller to completely and totally wipe iTunes and anything Apple-related off of my computer. Deep scanned the registry, deleted all program folders, defragged the drive as well as the registry. Emptied trash. etc. Apple was completely removed from my computer.

Reinstalled iTunes, got all the appropriate dialogs/TOU, etc., and installed. Pointed iTunes to my library which is on a USB3 exernal drive velcro'd to my laptop lid (been doing this for years). Everything was great. Successfully used iTunes to rename/renumber songs, change album names which moved files to appropriate folders. Played songs, etc., for about 20 minutes. While a song was playing, noticed I had unwatched/downloaded Podcasts. Clicked "Get All" and iTunes crashed immediately.
