Itunes 10.5.1 Completly not working in Win7 (64bit)

This has been a total disaster update for me. I am running Win7 (64bit) with all my windows updates current. I went ahead and updated Itunes to 10.5.1.

That was a severe mistake. Itunes crashes every time I start the program. I notice that genius is running right at the start up and I manage to shut it off but it still crashes.

So far I have done the following:

Started Itunes in safe mode----Crashes

Done a complete clean install and reinstall---Crashes

Downgraded to 10.5 clean install---Crashes

Upgraded back up to 10.5.1 started back in safe mode--Crashes.

I have stopped my anti-virus during all installs and starts and it still crashes.

My system is clean of viruses.

No error messages are provided for all the crashes other than "This program has stopped working"

My frustration is awful. I really hope they get this fixed or someone can offer a solution. I am so sorry I ran that upgrade.

Well, I finally got around to working on this again. Created a new profile and itunes opened fine. I wanted to rebbuild my profile but I currently don't have enough spare space on my HD. I tried running as admin and that is working temporarily. I don't remember who suggested trying the new profile but thanks. I used to be a helpdesk tech and rebuilding profiles was always the first thing I tried when I ran out of all other probable causes. It's amazing how quickly we forget to try the simple stuff. I had sugested the problem was on Apple's end but that's not the case, at least for me. Good luck to those who are still stumped.

mzblue99's advice got my iTunes back up and running. The key link http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1717 in that reply suggested that you start iTunes in safe mode first by holding down the Shift and Control keys when you launch iTunes. So that is what I did and found iTunes to run just like it had prior to the 10.5.1 update. So I followed the second link http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3430 to see how to disable third party plug ins that may not be compatible with the new version. When I looked in one of the two plug in locations, I found no third party plug ins. But when I checked /program files(x86)/iTunes/, I found the Mozilla Plugins folder that was referenced in another email. When I first deleted that folder, iTunes still locked up after launching. I figured I would try to just uninstall Firefox to see if by doing that it will properly remove the plugin folder.

I relaunched iTunes in normal mode and it works like a champ. Problem is that I now have to revert back to internet explorer until Firefox catches up with the plugin.

Hope this helps.

I'm having similar problems with Windows XP. Upgraded iTunes and now it crashes on startup.

I've tried uninstalling and doing a clean install - no joy.

I've tried creating a new user account - no joy.

I've tried removing all plug-ins - no joy.

Holding down shift and control to start it in safe mode - crashes before the safe mode message can appear.

Any further ideas?

I logged in to inform how I got itunes 10.5.1 working on my system after this crashing episode. As mentioned in earlier comments, I ran itunes in administrator mode in windows 7 64 bit and it worked like a charm. After that, I did not have use the administrator mode again. It just worked fine. Maybe Microsoft is sabotaging Itunes 😝. Kudos to billy_andika.

mzblue99 has it right. I tried every solution known to man with de-installing and re-installing everything. But once I created a new user profile and copied everything over, itunes works fine. Go figure !!

Keep in mind when you follow mzblue99's instructions and copy over your folders from your old profile, all those itunes files get copied over. So if you have a ton of video files such as tv shows and movies, this is going to be a multi-hour copy session. Further, it asks you many times during the copy process whether you want to copy/replace or skip a copy of certain files. So if you think you can walk away from it and come back in a couple hours and its done, afraid not. You'll have to check it frequently to see if its stopped to get your copy/replace permission for certain files.

Thanks mzblue !!

I had the exact same problem with 64-bit Vista. Was very frustrating. This is the link that fixed it for me:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1421

By creating a new user, I found out it was a user specific problem so I used those instructions. The very first thing they suggested to try fixed it!

I followed the instructions called: "Remove iTunes preference files"

Just blow away those two directories (or rename or move them if you want to be careful). Itunes will recreate them on startup. Something was broken in there but the recreated versions have been working fine. No more crashes!!

Just FYI, on Vista, the locations of those directories are different than the ones shown in the above link. On Vista they are in:

C:\Users\Lisa\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes

and

C:\Users\Lisa\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes

Again, just blow away those two iTunes directories and then restart itunes.

Hope this helps as I know how frustrating this problem was.

😠😠😠

Well, I have so far tried everything listed in this thread, as well as some tips from Microsoft and other websites. Nothing is working. I also am using 64-bit Win7.

Every stinking time I try to access the store, it hangs at mid bar for a moment then stops working completely. Windows Troubleshooter is telling me that Apple is aware and has a fix, suggesting that I update to the latest version. Funny thing is, I already have the latest version. But on a whim I tried anyway to no avail. This is frustrating as ****.

On 12/1 I had to wipe an HDD and start from scratch for seperate issues I was having. I am NOT doing it again just for iTunes.

BTW, other than the occasional error -39 while watching a rental at the same time it is downloading, iTunes was working fine in 32-bit Win7 on 11/30.
