Apple TV losing home sharing connection.

Apple Tv has worked fine for 11 months since purchase. After recent software updates it refuses to maintain a connection to itunes via wifi. Home sharing lasts no more than a few minutes before closing. Have to continually restart itunes or home sharing to restore the connection. Youtube etc working fine still, only itunes content a problem.

Is this a general issue or is this specific to me? Any advice would be appreciated.

While the timing is certainly suspicious that it has something to do with the update, do you have any new wi-fi networks that might be interfering or other sources of interference such as microwave ovens/cordless landline phones?

This sort of thing would normally be network related but not always.

In addition, any new security software on the PC which might be interfering with communication?

I am having the same problem as you are. As soon as I updated to 4.4.3 home sharing keeps dropping out. I have an iMac and the apple tv is normally connected through ethernet. I have also tried a wireless connection, but to no avail. Their has been a problem with home sharing since the last few upgrades. I have followed other posts with the same problem. Now its almost impossible to use home sharing. Everything else is working fine. This has got to be a problem with the software and not network settings. COME ON APPLE DO SOMETHING!

I am getting this error too.

I only recently put the update in, but if it stretches back to November, then you would think Apple would have already found and fixed the error.

Not being able to load the library is a problem because aTV wonderful software only let's you watch movies from the library file. purchased tv shows actually have a menu other than your library.

I don't know about anyone else, but I have several hundred movies from iTunes and at an average cost of $9.99 to $14.99 that's a lot of money to flush down the toliet Apple.

I've recently started having the problem of my Apple TV2 losing the home sharing connection to iTunes on my HP notebook computer too. It was rock solid for the year and a half I have had the ATV2 but since the latest software update loses the connection after five to ten minutes of playing music content from iTunes.

I am using a WiFi connection through a DLink router. I have reset the router, restarted iTunes and tried different router channels to no avail. Very frustrating.

I am also seeing this issue. I am not using Wi-Fi. I have a connected network connection. I am using a Verizon FIOS wifi/modem/router with both devices connected directly.

All I have to do is close and open iTunes to show the computer again in Apple TV.

I hope this is found to be an issue and fixed as it is a deal breaker for me to move my library to Apple TV from MCE.

I am also have problems getting the PBS application to stream video from my iPad, but it may be unrelated. I can stream video located on my iPad fine, but not from the PBS application.

I've seen the issue on the odd occasion. I had it happen again just tonight.

I noted that the Home Sharing option that allows me to also watch content from iTunes on my Mac with my iPad had also gone away too.

Straight away I have to now consider the issue is not with my ATV2 because it's replicated on the iPad. Is this the same for you? I did the normal bit of restarting iTunes and then even the Mac and then my ATV and my iPad. Nothing. ... Then I tried restating my router (a Netgear, 2 years old or so) and "Eureka" everything comes back on line.

Not sure what is being blocked or stopped by the router when my Internet access and email etc continued to work fine while Home Sharing was dead/blocked... but there you have it. Have you looked at your router as a possible source of your problem?

I doubt its the router as this only started happening after software patch 4.4.3.

Another reason is that I can watch cloud tv shows from the purchased list. If it was the router it would be stopping all my ATV's. My first gen units are just fine under my Cisco Router.

Apple needs to solve this problem quickly or I will definitely curb my support of iTunes, Apple TV and apps for my iPad.

This is going to sound crazy, but is anyone else out there using a McAfee Firewall?

When I went to my pc and attempted to sync one of my first gen aTV's, I was met by a warning saying iTunes could not access port 3689 via the firewall. I attempted to create a firewall rule and McAfee wasn't having it.

In a fit of desperation, I decided to download a free trial for a different Firewall and delete McAfee. After reboot, iTunes and all the aTV's went back to normal. The first gen's will sync and the second gen will access the library file.

After that, I installed Webroot Firewall and everything is still functioning, so I am a happy camper.

I can't imagine what went wrong. Did iTunes trigger some kind of threat response in McAfee that locked down the ports it uses to communicate with the aTV's or did the second gen aTV do something that McAfee did not like when I updated its software to 4.4.3.

I have had problems with missing AirPlay icon on both iPad and iPhone. I have had loooong conversations with the People at Apple - Nice people but no solution. If you have upgraded to newest software on iPad, Apple tv and iPhone, and have connected to the same router, and still have problems, the problem is 100 % the router. I have tried with 3 different routers. All working perfectly except AirPlay. It was a Zyxel, d-link and Sagem router. The Zyxel router I could'nt get to work. Both d-link and Sagem worked without any problems. Today I use the Sagem. So if your AirPlay icon is instable or do not appear, and all is upgraded to latest level, then try with another router.

There's a 37 page thread on this at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2776955?start=0&tstart=0

If you read through them all, it seems to be an TV plus iTunes problem as most problems seem to start after updates to one or the other, including at leat one user who had no problems for 9 months until upgrading iTunes - but it has happended since 10.2.2 so it's not restricted to 10.5.x versions.

Some people seem to have acheived a fix by resetting or replacing their routers but often relief is only temporary. In my case, the failure happened after a week of succeesful Airplay from the macBook, iPhone and Touch then - nothing worked. I took the TV back and got a replacement that works (for now at least). And, BTW, the wireless seetings on my router/modem were screwed and had to be reset after the failure.

Since it affects iOS devices and OSX 10.7 alike the source has to be iTunes and/or the TV OS.

BUT, for all of you who are crying out for Apple to do something, you need to cry someplace else as they don't monitor the community sites. You need to contact them at http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html and also at http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

Unfortunately I am not ready to believe there is a global conspiracy amongst router manufacturers to stop apples products from working. For the record, I am using one of the new Cisco 3200 Valet routers.

Let's also keep in mind that the common denominator that brings us all together is the Apple software. In the case of Apple TV 2, software update 4.4.3. Before I updated, my Apple TV 2nd generation worked just fine.

The issue at hand is one that Apple needs to address because its their software, not our routers.
