how do you update iphone 3g to ios 5?

I just restored my iphone 3G in the process of updating from 4.2.1 to ios 5. After restor it didn't ask to update to ios 5, it asked to set up as new iphone or sync what was backed up. Do I need to set up as new iphone in order to update to version 5?

The iPhone 3G is long ago obsolete. All manufacturers eventually stop supporting old hardware, not just Apple. At this point you are free to do with your iPhone 3G whatever you wish. If you are convinced that it is capable of more, there is a world of opportunity that you can explore. It's your phone. It's out of warranty. Go have fun. The only thing holding you back at this point is possibly your own technical expertise.

Yes, no need to be impolite.

It is obvious that iphone wants people to spend more and more money on a new product and that I find unfair, it is expensive and a waste to always be buying new stuff. Old things should work for longer! So that we won't waste money and polute our planet.

I don't think I'd want to buy an iphone again if an iphone 5 that is now on the market gets obsolete in two or three years, what point is that?

I hope more agree with me.

You'd be hard pressed to find any smart phone that still supports the latest and greatest updates after three years. The pace of technological change is rapid. "Fair" is irrelevant in this context.

However, an iPhone 3G will stil make and receive calls, sendt text messages, access the web.

Technology improves, processors become more powerful. Software designed to run on the newer hardware simply won't run on older hardware. And no, it's not cost effective for a company to continue to support legacy hardware. And, yes, companies like Apple are for profit companies.
